1 Since grammar deals with abstract words and how they are used, rather than concrete objects, Charlotte advocated postponing formal grammar study until at least age 10. Reading aloud good literature lays the foundation of your child’s hearing proper grammar.

English for the Thoughtful Child

These gentle lessons can be done orally for the most part. They incorporate picture study, poetry recitation, dictation, narration, and an introduction to some basic grammar concepts without being tedious.

4 Use this year to concentrate on spelling/dictation and to get started with typing skills.
5 Junior Analytical Grammar (first part) Now we begin formal grammar studies. These lessons cover the parts of speech and the functioning parts of a sentence. Cover the lessons at the child’s pace, completing no more than half of the course each year. If needed, finish the course in Grade 7.
6 Junior Analytical Grammar (second part)
7 This year either finish Junior Analytical Grammar or take a break, and don’t panic. Grammar is a finite body of information that can easily be learned over the next three (or four) years.
8 Analytical Grammar, Pt. 1 Cover the lessons at the child’s pace, completing no more than Units 1–10 this year.
9 Analytical Grammar, Pt. 2 Cover the lessons at the child’s pace, completing no more than Units 11–17 this year.
10 Analytical Grammar, Pt. 3 Cover the lessons at the child’s pace, completing no more than Units 18–34 this year.
11 (Write a formal essay) Hold students responsible for all the grammar and punctuation they have been taught as they compose their written narrations and formal essays. If the student is following the SCM Curriculum Guide suggestions for Bible, these essays could be completed when writing the personal doctrinal statement.
