Product Description
You and your child are sure to enjoy these simple, lively elementary math lessons that nurture mathematical thinking and help your student advance in understanding decimals and fractions, working with factors, and both greatest and least common measures. Your student will also continue work with drawing to scale along with measures in decimals and fractions, using both the US standard and metric systems.
Practical Geometry
With Book 5, the recommended schedule changes from every day to four days per week. For the fifth day, a hands-on geometry lesson should be completed from Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 1. These weekly geometry lessons give the student experience with mathematical tools such as a compass and protractor, and guide the student in understanding foundational ideas in geometry. This hands-on approach develops the student’s comfort with the mechanics of tools, drawings, and geometrical concepts before formal geometry and proofs are introduced. We suggest that 5th grade students work on arithmetic Monday through Thursday, with Friday reserved for practical geometry.
For a complete Charlotte Mason grade 5 math curriculum, you will need The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, Book 5, Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 1, and a Math Notebook for your child (sized according to your child’s handwriting). Add the optional Practical Geometry kit for a helpful collection of geometry tools corresponding to the lessons. A convenient 5th grade math kit is available that includes The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, Book 5, Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 1, and the Practical Geometry kit.

Charlotte Mason’s Approach to Elementary Arithmetic
Charlotte Mason’s math lessons are perfect for an elementary child.
Lessons are mainly oral and are carefully graduated, with your child answering small word problems within his understanding (no reading required). He works out the problems in a hands-on way using a variety of common, everyday objects. This straightforward but interesting teaching guides your child to make discoveries on his own.
A grid notebook is used as the student’s math notebook, in which she records the math concepts she has discovered.
Progression of the lessons is adjusted to the pace that fits your child best, so you can go slowly enough to build understanding and confidence in the math concepts but not so slowly that the child becomes bored.
Short, lively lessons reinforce a habit of concentrated attention while not overtaxing the child’s ability to sit still. Book 5 also guides you in helping your child begin independent math lessons. Each day’s work goes no longer than 30 minutes, with 25 minutes focused on the newest math concept and review, and the remaining 5 for mental math.
