Thanks MountainMamma for the encouragment.  I’m going to start looking at craigslist and thrift stores for deals.  Should watch the paint store also. 🙂

Hi everyone! I promised I would get photos of our schoolroom up when it was ready. Well..it’s been done for quite some time, but I finally got around to doing a video tour of it! Thought you all might like to see what it looks like.

It’s on the blog today: http://todayindietzville.blogspot.com/2013/11/virtual-tour-our-schoolroom.html

    Blessings!

Ok, Lindsey, first of all, you are just so cute! Seriously! It’s so neat to actually kind of “meet” you in this manner. 🙂

Now on to some comments on the video. Love it! And noticed it looked like the SCM forum was on your computer screen. Nice touch! Some questions: what was under the chalkboard? What about just to the right of it? What was behind the easel that reminds me of crib slats but of course must be something else? What do you use to adhere the picture study prints to the walls?

Love the reading corner and the little shelf, and those rain gutters are super cute. I’ve heard of people doing that, but it’s so perfect with their desks right there. Really liked the shoe storage area for various supplies, and the map with the literature pegs. Oh, and that original wallpaper! How cool is that?

But most of all, I just loved how simple and focused and uncluttered it felt. Remind me again how old your kids are? And do you have more books/shelves/storage elsewhere? This just speaks to my desiring-a-simpler-life heart, the way you have the things they are using accessible and not a ton extra. Even the closet was simple, with free space.

    Nicely done! Thanks for sharing!

    Super cute room, Lindsey!

We are still schooling mostly in the living room, but I have been able to make it feel nice as a CM school room and as a comfy living room for family and guests. We also have study areas for my two older kids in the kids’ bedrooms as well as utilizing the kitchen table when necessary.

I thought it was good that you made it clear that your homeschooling went just as well without a designated room just for schooling. Though, I have to admit, I still think it would be nice! ; ). hehehe!

Thanks for sharing with us Lindsey!! Loved your little room & you have great ideas! Using an old door for a chalkboard is a clever idea. I have never thought of that :).

@Lady in Pink: I’m guessing the slats are for the staircase!??

@ Lindsey – it’s fun to see and hear you in person after several years on the forum. 😉 I really like what you have done with your room. It’s a great use of space.  I liked your wall colors. Thanks for sharing!

Awwww, thanks, y’all! You’re too sweet! To answer your questions:

Under the chalkboard: 21 Rules of This House

To the right of the chalkboard: a map of the U.S., our current Scripture for memorizing, and a list of things the kids can do if they’re waiting on me to finish something with another kid, such as study a map, look at Material World/Hungry Planet, draw in nature notebook, study a poem.

Crib slats behind the easel: This is actually a really cool feature of our house. Because the hallway at the top of the stairs that goes into the room is so narrow, this crib slat-looking wall is actually a removable panel so that you can get furniture into the room!

Adhering picture study to the walls: It’s a tacky wall putty that does a great job of holding paper or laminated things to the wall without having to use thumbtacks. Like this

Wall color: It’s a paint color from Home Depot called Elegance (I forget which brand.). It’s the perfect gray–no green or blue added. It’s the color we have throughout the majority of the house (kitchen, living room, hallways, son’s room, half of the bathroom). We love this color and took months to decide on the perfect shade of gray.

We really love the simplicity of this space too. It’s pretty reflective of the rest of our home: uncluttered, spacious, simple, cute and elegant at the same time. I hate clutter, so it’s absolutely necessary for all spaces in our home to be as tidy and organized as possible!

It is such a blessing to have this space. But, honestly, I do miss the days of schooling at the dining table sometimes!

    Blessings,

    Lindsey

If you’re interested in the wall color, this is what it looks like with natural sunlight. This is our living room, decorated for the holidays: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/230528074649804000/

Lindsey – Love your blogpost and so did my son (who watched with me). He says we look alike :-)(except that I am older) and we have many of the same things in our school room – which is very much smaller and very square.

I realized from your post that I need my picture study stuff up on the wall, and that I need a MOMMY chair in the school room! Right now we do family work there, but I have to perch on a little school chair. That big, upholstered chair is looking mighty nice to me.

    Good job!!

I, too, love the idea of the artist sections on the walls. I have a large corkboard in the kitchen that would probably be perfect to transform into an “artist study” center! 🙂

Love it, Lindsey!  You’ve done a wonderful job and the space is just so cozy and well utilized.  I am totally stealing those rain gutter shelf ideas…I was just watching the video, pressed paused as soon as I saw the shelves and got DH in here so he could finally see exactly what I need by our desks/workstations – thank you!!!!  And I love the picture study prints on the wall and the map (was so excited to see the map; I have a large map on order for my kids and we will be doing this idea in January – thanks for bringing it to life for me)

As the others said, it’s so nice to “meet” you.  And your opening piece was just so sweet!

Thanks for sharing; this really does give some great ideas.

Here are some very cool wall decals (we LOVE wall decals since we’re renters and can’t paint!) that would be perfect for the school room/kitchen/office!

Lindsey, I am really loving that paint colour.  If there is any chance you might come across which brand at Home Depot it was, would be great if you could post or PM me.   We are in a new house that is almost entirely a dentist office mint green (!)  We really don’t like it at all ….have only hesitated to do anything about it because choosing paint colours is always such a headache for us.  Seems like you did the work and found a great choice!!  Please share if you end up finding it…   Blessings, Angie
