I am looking for simple copywork for my son. He will be finishing A Reason for Handwriting A and has very neat handwriting. I want more variety for his copywork but I don’t want to create my own, so I’m looking at the SCM copywork/readers.

I had a couple of questions about them. How many pages do they have have? Would one volume be enough for daily copywork for the year, or would all three voulumes be used in one year? How large are the lines they write on? The smaller size he worked with in ARFH A was just right. The larger lines in the K level were just a little big. And lastly, would this be a good copywork program to use before Spelling Wisdom? He won’t be ready for Spelling Wisdom for at least two years.

    Thanks.

There should be a link to download a free sample near the top of each product’s page. I think that will answer a lot of your questions but don’t hesitate to let us know if we can fill in the gaps some more.

You didn’t say how old your son is or which of our copywork books you were looking at, so I’ll just give you a quick overview.

If you look at the bottom of our beginning reading and writing product pages you’ll see a little diagram that shows the progression from learning to read through becoming a more fluent reader. In order, they are:

    1. Delightful Reading—A complete CM reading curriculum. (Early Years–Grade 2)
    2. Delighful Handwriting—A gentle handwriting course progressing from simple strokes to letters to words to copying beautiful phrases and sentences. (Early Years–Grade 2)
    3. A Child’s Copybook Reader—A reader and copybook in one for practice in reading and printing. (Grades 1–3)
    4. Print to Cursive—Continued practice printing while gently and gradually transitioning to cursive. (Grades 2–3)
    5. Hymns in Prose—A reader if your child needs more reading instruction or just an opportunity to practice reading aloud. (Grades 2–3)

Everyone doesn’t need all of those, but the options are available if you do.

Now, copywork is an essential building block before moving to spelling with prepared dictation. At some point, your son should naturally move from copying letter by letter to transcription where he copies whole words and then phrases. He should also be noticing how words are spelled. Those are the foundational skills needed to move into prepared dictation.

    I hope that helps.

Thank you. I should have been more specific. I was looking at A Child’s Copybook Reader that comes with 3 volumes. It’s the third one you mentioned.

I did check the product page and was able to find the number of pages for each. I must have been overlooking it. For anyone reading this later they have 60, 58, and then 60 pages. And in the reviews section I saw that the line size changes to just a base line for volumes 2 and 3, but the font size remains the same in all three books. Is that right?

That’s correct, Sharma. You can regulate how much your child can write with ease, and thus, how quickly or slowly you work through the books. My thought is that a person could probably use one volume per term, or three books for one year; but that would also depend on how often you do copywork during the week and how much your child can copy with full attention and best effort in one sitting. Use them as a tool and adapt them to fit your child.

    Hope this helps!
