Thank you for the additional ideas.  I like having two times on the timer, one to limit the time getting ready and one to be sure they brush their teeth long enough, 2 minutes is what I have read.  And I do plan to have them help clean up more.  They take their dishes from the table to the dishwasher and I load the cooking items by the stove and run it.  That does not take too long.  But then I have some to handwash and this is something they can help with more now.

As for the screen time, if it were up to me I would not have a television in our main room, which is in the middle of the house.  But this is how my husband wants to spend his time and I cannot change that so I must find ways to work around it.  It is a great distraction and you don’t know how much I truly wish it were not there.  I am not saying no tv at all, but that it would not be the main focus of the main living area and to be limited in time and content more.  I do limit screen time in the day and stick to educational shows.  About once a week we have a family movie in the evening.  The rest is my husband’s choices in the evenings.  So I know it is better for my kids to go to bed earlier and read a little.   We do not have cable or satellite, though he would like that.  We have agreed on local channels on the antennea like PBS and we have streaming Netflix.  We also have a Roku with You Tube and those channels.  Many times he watches Andy Griffith with the kids.  The tv problem has been here for years.  I can really relate to this odler post linked at the bottom, and commented then.  Our evenings have changed over the years from this post and I need to find a way to get back into a routine and bedtime readings.  And my problem is more with the computer time I spend/waste than the tv and need to cut back on that myself.  And I tried a game night but he usually opts out of it.  The family movie night works good once a week.

@wings2fly — I just wanted to say that I feel for you with the tv thing. It is the exact same way here in our home. My dh suffers from extreme chronic pain and I know the tv is a distraction that he feels helps him a little, but I would LOVE to just have it off. And  it’s right in the main room of a pretty small house. It’s hard to escape it! lol

I have control over the tv the rest of the day, and it is used only rarely adn with discretion. But the evenings? And the weekends? Ugh. All.the.time. And there are good shows much of the time, or good sports games…but really? *I* get so easily distracted by it too. Darn that Netflix! He does find some really interesting shows on there some times! lol Oh, and I struggle with simliar issues with the computer that you alluded to, as well.

Anyway, just throwing an empathetic look your way amidst this discussion.  🙂

Well the joke is on me. My husband just informed me tonight that he ordered satellite tv. And I am quite upset about it. He did say we could cancel Netflix, but I don’t see how this is going to help anything.
