On this page you will find details about how to teach science with the Charlotte Mason Method, an overview of science topics to cover in all twelve grades, and Charlotte Mason Method living science courses.

Charlotte Mason Method Science Lessons

The Charlotte Mason approach to science is two-faceted: systematic studies with science courses and spontaneous discovery through nature study. We cover nature study separately as a subject for the whole family together, so be sure to check out our nature study page for more ideas.

In the elementary grades (1st–6th), science can be done with living books and narration, alongside hands-on experiments so that children gain firsthand experience with the wonders of God’s creation. A living science book does not have to be a story—it can be a book with a conversational tone that helps the reader imagine what is being described, ideally with good pictures. The Simply Charlotte Mason curriculum has many living science courses to choose from, all designed to guide your children in interesting science discoveries that will lay a foundation for upper-level science courses.

In the upper grades (7th–12th), students should complete upper-level science courses that teach a specific science field. Not all advanced science topics can be explained with a living book, so we recommend using a conversational science textbook written by an author with a passion for the subject. Our recommended upper-level science courses are published by Berean Builders, written by Dr. Jay Wile specifically for homeschool students.

Upper-level students may also want to add a supplemental living book on an interesting science topic, such as a biography of a scientist or the story of how a key scientific discovery was made.

Charlotte Mason Science Curriculum

We recommend these science courses that use the Charlotte Mason Method of living books and narration, or are conversational textbooks that fit well with the Charlotte Mason approach.

Elementary Living Science Courses

These living science courses are designed to introduce elementary-age students to the wonders of God’s creation through fascinating living books and hands-on discovery. Tip: If your students are close in age, feel free to combine them and complete one living science course together. Check each course’s page for grade-level recommendations.

Upper-Level Science Courses

These science courses are written to the student and designed to be used in a homeschool setting. You, the parent, do not have to understand the science for your student to complete the course. These courses are also in-depth enough to satisfy high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
