I know CM recommends keeping a variety of subjects and using different parts of the brain to avoid a child dawdling or getting distracted. But how would that work with Family Learning Together? For example – I’ve heard Sonya say to not do reading after reading after reading – but to do a reading, then alternate to math, then picture study, maybe music study then another narration. I can see how that would work with an individual child, but how would that work if you have all your children together for Family Together subjects?

I can tell you how it looks in our house. The children I do family subjects with are 6th grade and 9th grade so they can sometimes handle a back-to-back reading, though I try to avoid it. Typically it looks something like this:

Poetry (a bit more lively than just a reading)

Of course we mix it up also, depending on our mood, something might even get skipped altogether (and I don’t stress on it). Family literature includes my 11th grader and is during lunch. I always eat first and then read while they eat.

There is a large variety in family subjects which provides you with the ability to switch the type of subject/brain function. In our family, we would work through the enrichment activities, daily Bible Reading, and history readings in 1 sitting (with the exception of art instruction, handicrafts, and nature study…those are saved for the afternoon). Many of the enrichment subjects are completed 1x per week.

My family prefers to save art instruction, handicrafts, and nature study for the afternoons and during seasons, the read aloud for lunch. We add our history reading to our morning time/family study.
