Hi CM Educators! We are new to implementing the CM method. While I have used the SCM Planner and loved using it, I am having a hard time figuring out how to schedule the living books Stories of America and Stories of the Nations over the three terms. I’d love to hear suggestions from those who have used these particular books. Thank you

We have used them, but I am not much help:) . We use them as directed through the SCM history guides, year 5 & 6. We really liked them.

SCM schedules Stories of America and Nations as the spine, so we read a few chapters then would read a more in depth book about someone or something that we read about in Stories of America and/or Nations. We did American History twice/week with Stories of America as the spine and World History twice/week using Stories of the Nations as the spine.

You could do something similar. Read the chapter titles and select different people/things that you want to study more in depth.

If you look at the samples of SCM history guides you can see all the books that they schedule for year 5 (Early American/World) and year 6 (Modern American/World) that are used along with Stories of America & Nations.

Thank you! My student will begin in grade 8, so perhaps I purchased the wrong material? However, I do appreciate your comments. I am assuming that the term “spine” is similar to introduction or high-level and then you did a more deeper study on people, things, and places?

No, you did not purchase the wrong thing. The History Guides are divided into 6 time periods and the ones that Sarah referred you two are the History Guide 5 Early Modern History and History Guide 6 Modern History. They contain within them the schedule for all students years 1-12.

A spine is a book that contains an over-all comprehensive look at something…in this case the history of America. It does not go into great detail on particular subjects. A spine introduces each student to major events in history but the student digs deeper into areas that interests him/her. Some will want to study military history, some will love biographies, some will want pilgrims/pioneers, etc.

Here is a link to those guides. Each guide has the schedule spine with additional books scheduled for each grade already in them. If you will download the samples, it will show you how Sonya has scheduled those spines.
