We have been using Spelling Wisdom with my 4th grader for about a year.  I find though that we are getting bogged down in the punctuation.  How essential is it that all the punctuation be correct?? Do most people assign the whole passage to be dictated or just a portion?

I think it is pretty important that the punctuation be correct. You can definitely shorten the dictation. I have done that often with my kids. They are required to study the whole passage, but I kay only dictate a portion. I make sure to dictate from various places, for example I dont just start at the beginning and dictate the first two sentences. I may dictate the last sentence, or a middle sentence, that way they  don’t just study the beginning. They never know where I will dictate from. You could also go back to transcription if your child isn’t quite ready for dictation.

Are you using Using Language Well with Spelling Wisdom? If so, you should hold your child accountable in the dictation lesson for any punctuation marks that have been taught in the Using Language Well lessons. If not, as part of the dictation lesson, you can point out punctuation marks and tell why they are used before your child studies the passage. Then, you can require your child to remember to use those punctuation marks in the appropriate places  when doing dictation. Introduce one mark at a time. When your student consistently remembers to place that mark correctly, you can add another one.

Here are our recommendations for how much of a passage to dictate:

    Book 1

Grade 3 —Assign the whole passage to be transcribed. Occasionally ask the student to verbally spell two or three words from the passage from memory.

Grade 4 — Assign up to the whole passage to be studied. Dictate 1-2 sentences.

    Book 2

Grades 5 & 6 — Assign the whole passage to be studied. Dictate 2-3  sentences (grade 5) or 3-4 sentences (grade 6).

    Book 3

Grade 7 & 8— Assign the whole passage to be studied. Dictate up to one paragraph.

    Book 4

Grades 9 & 10 — Assign the whole passage to be studied. Dictate up to two paragraphs.

    Book 5

Grades 11 & 12 — Assign the whole passage to be studied. Dictate up to three paragraphs.
