    Hi gang !

Let me give a bit of my background …..I am in my 3rd year of HS and each year I have tried different curriculums. The first year I felt overwhelmed when I went to the local convention and ended up buying a complete box set out of desperation to pick something instead of really evaluating it to see if it was a good fit. I ended up switching mid – year to unit studies with Galloping the Globe which got us through the school year. I dabbled in Lapbooks the beginnng of the 2nd year and then branched out to individual vendors ( All about spelling for spelling , Right Start math for math etc . ) . The end of last school year I was introduced to CM and quickly began incorporating nature study and oral narration. This school year I was given a year’s worth of MFW curriculum and thought I would try it since it was free.  We are using the MFW adventures in U.S. history for our Hist/ Geo. and I have added the Scripture memory system , picture study and composer study.

So my point I guess is that I have never had much far sigted planning  so far . It feels like it’s been short term planning-  semester to semester . Dare I say ……  becuase of a lack of long term planning it’s been just surviving each semester ( gasp ! ). I am starting to think about where all this is going and how and when to fit in everything during the course of their school years.

I am aware that I have the freedom to begin anywhere in the history modules.  I would like to try the SCM history modules next school year . But it had me thinking about future years and high school . This may sound like a silly question , but when all 6 modules are completed do  you start them over?  I am thinking specifically about my 2nd grader…..if we do all the 6 modules beginning next year we would finish his 8th grade year. Would I start over and do Ancients a 2nd time ? At that point would we just pick the modules that interested them most?

How many of you plan all the way to high school or to graduation?  I guess I am just wanting a little bit more of long term planning or least have an idea instead of being so short sighted with school stuff.

Thanks for reading and for all your insight !

Have you read the series of articles here on SCM’s blog about planning?  It’s great, and then if you want more detailed help they have a book that takes it further, gives you forms and guides, etc, called Planning Your Charlotte Mason Education.  I love it.  While I don’t feel the need to lock in plans through high school I do like having a general direction to go.  Then if we get to a year when we want to go a different way we can.

Yes, Jamie, the modules are meant to been done twice. There are books scheduled for all grade levels so the children are always learning at their appropriate levels. The modules that you re-visit may be decided on by your state or college requirements. In making your plans, it is helpful (& necessary) to know what those requirements are.

I also appreciated the book that Tristan linked. It has made a huge difference in how I think about planning, planning itself, and my confidence levels about our educational decisions for our family.
