I was going to use AO next year, but last night I stumbled upon SCM.  I am considering SCM Module 1 for History/Geography/Bible.  I love the idea of having all my kids learning in the same time period, so this seems like a better fit for us.  However, today I began pricing all the books and resources and I am very discouraged again.  Just those books alone would eat up our budget, and that’s only 3 subjects.  I have many specific questions, but for now, I am just wondering if #1 anyone has used Module 1 but substituted a different text for for the Oxford First Ancient History and #2 if The Oxford Children’s Ancient History is comperable.

Don’t fret!  Many of the resources may be available at your library!  Be sure to check there first – especially if you’re on a tight budget.  Second, you can most certainly do module 1 without Oxford – it’s great, but you can find other books from the library to substitute for the ancient Egypt lessons.  (Also – someone just emailed me her list of things for sale and Oxford was on there for $20!!!)  Third – lots of people are finishing up with their year and have been posting on this forum that you can pm them for a list of books available – many of them are offereing the books you need for very reasonable used prices so be sure to check those out.  Fourth – we didn’t use the commentaries for Module 1 and we did fine, I have a friend that used them and LOVED them, but they weren’t in the budget for us so we just supplemented those lessons with our own adult commentaries – I would read them and then paraphrase for the girls (good narration practice for me).

Yes don’t worry.  I did Mod 1 this past year, downloaded (cheaper) used books from the library on different topics and didn’t use the commentaries sicne my ds were 7 w/ 5 yr old tagging along.  And I did download the Boy of the Pyramids which the 7yr old Loved.  I did save up and get the Oxford book, but was dissappointed, we didn’t “love” it, although I referred to it myself sometimes to find other books on the topic.  I have since felt much more confident in CM methods and feel I don’t even need a guide for right now, so just finding books/cds etc at library.  I was even going to purchase a handwriting/cm copywork book but have decided I can do just as well with paintbrushes in water outside, whiteboard, pencil/paper/clipboard etc.  So in essense, getting creative with what I have.

    Hello,

I’m pretty sure it’s been decided that the Oxford First and the Oxford Children’s books are the same…just different titles.

We are in Term 2 of Module 1 and have no problem doing without the Oxford Book. For the rest of the books listed I get almost everything I need from the library and have found it easy to subsitute books as needed without much trouble. This is our first year HS and have found SCM a blessing for ease of use and being able to do the work as a family! One of the things I love the most is the curriculum is offerd as being as flexible as your family needs! I highly recommend it!

GuarinoMom~ I am so glad you are having a good experience with homeschooling your first year.  We haven’t had “bad” exeriences, but I am definately still searching for curriculum that fits us well.  I am excited to try either all SCM next year or a mix of SCM and AO.  But definatly SCM for the Bible/History/Geography mix.  Thanks for letting me know you are doing well without all the exact books.

Here is a post on this forum that has an exact comparison of Oxford First and Oxford Children’s, and it says that all of the pages and even the pictures are the same–except for one additional page in chapter 1 of the Oxford Children’s Ancient History. So, if you see either one at a good price, snap it up!
