    Evening,

My son and I are new to this program, he really seems to like it so far. I am having much difficulty finding the book needed for History, I have already spent a good bit of money on all the books that go along with the Ancient Egypt section and do not want to spend 198.00 dollars for this book. Is there any book that I can use to substitute this with or would someone be willing to email me a couple of the pages from the 2nd chapter until I can figure out what I am going to do?

    Lisa,

I am looking for the book as well, and the cheapest I’ve found is $98!!    What happened that the book is so incredibly expensive?

Hope we can come up with a good alternative!

Horray!  I found it much cheaper!!!!
I did some more searching, and someone posted a link on here about a month ago, and I clicked on it.  It is selling for about $25.  It says Out Of Print, but you can still buy it.  It cost me a total of $30.45.  Never thought I’d be saying that was a GREAT deal for a book!

I’m an avowed bibliophile and booklist junkie who owns this book, but I don’t think that this book or most books are worth this amount of money. Please read this article, Book Lists: Handle With Care, for an explanation of why the prices of oop books go crazy. There are alternatives available that would work fine, I’m sure. In fact, there were several threads on this forum recently about this book.

I just wanted to mention that I ordered this book from the Oxford Press at the same website as Alice.  I ordered several weeks ago and so far I have not received my book.  Maybe it will still show up.

    MommaK5,

Did you actually get charged for the purchase??  I have ordered through the same company and it hasn’t been debited from my bank account nor have I received a confirmation email for the order.

This will be the 3rd time that I have actually ordered this book to not have it arrive (and be reimbursed) or have it out of stock from the site:(

Oh well, maybe it’s just not meant to be:)

I just got it from amazon.co.uk for about $32 US shipped.  I guess they are sold out now or maybe they just had the 1?

Just keep looking.  Search for Oxford First Ancient History and Oxford Children’s Ancient History.

Here is a link to the other thread about this book.

I ordered it through alibris, as well and never got it:(  I was reimbursed, but still empty handed, oh well.

Over all my years doing this, I too have had difficulty from time to time find a book that was recommended – for a while it would bother me – but eventually I realised that you cannot waste money by getting into a price war over something like a book – there are many quality publications out there, and there is always an alternative.  I think that the people who make the recommendations do not want us to drive ourselves crazy over finding a particular book, they just recommend based on what they think works, but there are always alternatives.  So after a year or two where I worried about such things, I decided to stop and do my own thing.  If the book was available at a decent price, great – if not I would find something else, and 99% of the time it worked fine.  So please don’t make the mistake of going over budget, or worrying that you are doing less than you should be, if you have difficulty sourcing a book – just be confident and know that your child will not fail because you lack the exact resource – there are many excellent books out there – don’t worry – things always work out fine in the end.  Linda

    my3boys,

Well, now that you mention it I don’t think I did end up getting charged for the book.  I bet they don’t really have it, oh well.  I did find a copy through another used book dealer (I hope anyway) and paid $40.00 shipped. So I guess I will see if it shows up. There should be something comparable out there.  I am going to pray the latest order shows and in the mean time look for something else that would work.

    @ Kathy,

I did call University Press today and the young fella told me it was out of print (Yah, I know) and that is why I wasn’t actually debited:)

So, I have tried some place else, but I really doubt I will get it.  If it doesn’t arrive in about 10 days I’ll bet they don’t even have it.  I’m saving my emails and receipts (more than usual) just in case:)

I do realize that there are other books out there and that may be the road we’ll have to take, but I really just wanted that one, (whining:)

    Blessings to all.

I just searched on Amazon and Half.com for The Romans by Burrell and paid about $6.50.  Maybe you can do a search for the Egyptian, ancient peoples section.  I believe all of these were eventually compiled into the Oxford First History.  The Romans has worked great for us, it has been easy for me to find the correct chapter, no page numbers needed.

Oh, and I also ordered from OUP, and received a letter that they were out of stock.  They should really take out of their store 🙂  But they never debited my account 🙂

I just called OUP and was told that my order did not go through.  So, I’m back to square one.  I also checked to see if Amazon had any books by Burrell on Egypt, that I found none. 🙁  What other books should I use to substitute?  Since I don’t know what exactly will be studied using this book, I’m not sure how to find a good substitute.

A First Ancient History: On the Threshold of History, Bk. 1″ by R.E.C. Burrell is the one with Egypt in it.
