Does anyone have suggestions for incorporating a high school literature credit into the SCM history modules. It seems to me that Early and Modern have enough lit in them, but the Module only recommends history credit. If we did more discussion/analysis/writing of the titles in the modules would that be enough. We will also have spelling, grammar and formal writing. Would that be enoughh for and english credit? Maybe Karen or Sonya could share how they designed their high school english class.
TristanParticipantThis is a great question, I hope Karen and Sonya chime in. I’m in the thick of this sort of thing and what we do is use some of the history reading/discussion that we do toward a literature credit. Then we add in grammar, spelling, a separate writing curriculum, and more literature that doesn’t correspond to history.
Melanie32ParticipantI would definitely want to add in more classic literature books. SCM has recommendations in their free curriculum guide.
Sonya ShaferModeratorI awarded high school English credits for Grammar, Spelling, Composition, and Literature. The credits were compiled from
- Completing Analytical Grammar
- Doing dictation twice a week
- Written narrations in various subjects
- Studying some Shakespeare plays
- Reading poetry and doing poet studies
- Reading and discussing recommended literature books, either together or independently
If the student is college bound, I would also add the Literary Essay and Research Paper courses from Analytical Grammar’s Beyond the Book Report #3.
KeriJParticipantI just wanted to mention that I have been reading through the Reader’s Odyssey. It is a homeschool literature plan that totally meshes with CM in my opinion. Much of what she says reminds of SCM’s approach to literature.
