I’m new to home schooling this year. I’m choosing to go for what me and my kids will fall in love with instead of playing it safe, which means doing it the Charlotte Mason way. My oldest is comfortable with home schooling until “Corona virus is over,” he says. I’m secretly hoping we both fall in love with it though.
I am trying to pick a science for my 3rd grader. I also have a 1st grader, 4 year old, and a 2 year old. My kids are crazy about bugs right now, so it seems logical to pick the Jack’s Insects program. But then I saw that it is for for 4-6 graders. So my question is:
Is it going to be too hard to do with my age group?
Is the book list a lot to buy for a beginner?
What are the books I will actually need to get going for the first term?
Jack’s Insects is too much for your age group. It is an older book written by a British author filled with British wit and humor. The chapters are quite long. The Jack’s Insects Narration & Nature Study Notebook requires written narration and some research. Written narration is introduced around the age of 10, and only with experienced oral narrators.
For the summer, when insects are plentiful, allow your children to notice and observe insects during your weekly nature study time. You could also get a few age appropriate books about different insects to read to them. There are several books on insects for grades 1-3 listed on our Living Science Books list. For a science curriculum, I recommend either Pond & Streamor Learning About Birds with Thornton Burgess.
For insect stories in the early elementary grades, I recommend Among the Meadow People by Clara Dillingham Pierson. About half the stories in this title involve insects or spiders. If you buy a newly printed book, be sure it is the higher quality book from Yesterday’s Classics. Among the Night People has some insects in it, too. These stories also teach character lessons. They are wonderful family read alouds. We also used Bugs: Big and Small, God Made Them All book from Master Books. Great photos in it.
My children used the Jack’s Insects study in grades 5 or 6 independently. It is written in a similar literary style as Alice in Wonderland. I bought most of the books used online. I used a substitute for some of the books if I had a similar book on the same topic.
