I have been looking at SCM for a few years now. I will have a 3rd grade (age 8) and a 1st grader (age 6) this fall. We have studied creation a lot. I would really like to not start with Creation again. Is there any reason I shouldn’t start with Early Modern? It seems more interesting to me. I think SCM would be a good fit for us at this time, but I’m just not sure where to start. Any advice would be appreciated.
Starting with what interests you is the best way to begin history!!
Also, with your kids being so young, it’s not yet time to be concerned about gaps or chronology. Just study people/time frames that bring history alive.
I have been wondering this too. My son is 14 and I really don’t want to start from the beginning of Creation, so I am wondering where to start as well. I have never done a history curriculum with him and we have just read a lot and seen many documentaries. Even at this age do I need to worry about chronology?
simplemom, does your 14YO keep a history timeline book? I find it is helpful for my son to recognize dates, the order of events, and contemporaries.
Another thing my oldest enjoys is Story of the World on CD. With it’s short chapters and brief overviews, it helps him develop an understanding of some of the causes and effects.
With a 14 year old you would select your history time period based on what he needs for graduating. Usually, that means at least a full credit of American history, and maybe some world history. Completing the Early Modern & Epistles and the Modern Times, Epistles & Revelation lesson plans guides would give your son one credit each of American history and world history.
Yes, your son would do both the family books and the 7-9 grade level books. If you have other children at different grade levels, they would also do the family books and read or have read to them any books listed for their grade levels.
