I recently posted on the forum to find recommendations to use for an engaging book as a primary reading book to study about modern times for history this year at the high school level.  I am aware of Paul Johnson’s book entitled Modern Times, but I think that is too advanced for our teen daughter to use.  Do some of you parents have some good suggestions for us to use in place of this book?  Nobody has responded to my question on this forum so far. I hope there are some really good alternate choices out there that can be recommended for our use.

    Hello bicebunch,

If you are looking for an overview and are adding in other books, have you looked at the “The Century for Young People” by Peter Jennings? I’m going to throw that out there as we haven’t read it but maybe someone can give us a review.

There is a book by William Bennet called America The Last Best Hope and volume 2 and 3 covers modern history.

I am currently reading through volume 1.  I will be having my highschool aged son read this next year when we get to this time period.

Thank you, Richele and sixtimemom, for the book suggestions to use for high school history modern times study!  I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply, but I have been extra busy this past week and didn’t get to check again after nobody replying to my question at first.  Richele, are you the Richele who spoke at The Living Education Retreat in Windom, Minnesota this July?  The message snapshot looks like you!  If so, I loved your mathematics talks and challenging us to let the Holy Spirit lead us as we teach our children!  This summer was my second summer to attend the LER.  I have never heard of the book your recommended The Century for Young People, but I will check on it.  Sixtimemom, I have checked on William Bennet’s 3 volume set that you suggested, The Last Best Hope, but our high school aged daughter who I am doing the modern history study with this year would be troubled by some of the rough language that William Bennet has in his books that are not filtered out, so that leaves that book out for me, sad to say.  Otherwise, I heard it is a rather good option.  If anyone has any other suggestions for me, I would be very grateful.  It is difficult to find a good spine book for modern times that is not way too advanced for high school age, is very engaging, literary, and well done from a truth, beauty, and goodness viewpoint (without the rough language, I might add 🙂 ).

Sonya recommends William Bennett’s because with modern history, his has the least amt. of language.

Is the Martin Gilbert one not okay? He’s a very well-respected historian.

There’s many good individual books available, but that would take up more time.

    Hello Mrs. Bice,

Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words. I remember you well! It was really an honor to present at the LER and be with such a wonderful group of people. Your smiles, enthusiasm and attentiveness really gave me a sense of peace as I spoke.

I don’t remember the age of your daughter but it occurred to me that Gerald W. Johnson’s “A History for Peter” series came highly recommended by Nancy Kelly. There are three books in the series and “America Moves Forward” deals with 1917-1960.

Do let us know what you find in your research.

    Warmly,

    Richele

    Hi Richele,

Thank you for the title “A History for Peter.”  I will check on this.  Our daughter is 16.  I will look through my notes from the LER because I probably have something written down about this series.

Yes, the LER was wonderful and so many learned much from you!  Thanks again for all the time you put into your talks!  What a blessing!

    Many blessings,

    Sheila
