OK, me again, can you tell I’m in the throes (sp??) of planning.  My girls are loving Marie’s Words just as a fun guessing game to find the meaning of different words.  I’m not wanting to do a full-on vocabulary curriculum with them, but I would like for them to learn some of the different roots to help them disect words.  I’m looking for something self-taught for my 9 year old.  I’m not worried about slow or rigorous, I’d just let her go at her own pace, but I want something that’s a little structured as opposed to me just picking roots at random and having her memorize them.

I decided to do a roots program, too. I just couldn’t add full Latin this year. We enjoy playing Rummy Roots, but I wanted more. I added Vocabulary from Classical Roots book 4 for ds9 and Book A for dd12. I wanted workbook simplicity and not cards like English from the Roots Up (though otherwise it looks simple, too.)

Christie – Do you need the teacher’s guide as well as the student book for Vocabulary from Classical Roots?

Mine both did Word Roots A1 and A2 with Latin and Greek roots. They also use the CD-ROM.

    NO flashcards.

I totally forgot I own Word Roots. I need to install it on the new computers.

I bought from rainbow Resource and got the student books and the tests/answer key pack. I wanted the answer key to make it self checking. I did not get a teacher book.

We do Word Roots software. In a perfect world I would have done Greek and Latin with my children, but alas, not a perfect world or a perfect momma – so we just do Word Roots. I see that it will be beneficial for them. Inexpensive and totally self done. One less thing for this imperfect momma!

We downloaded the trial version of Word Roots and my daughter is able to play it, but I’m not sure she’s really gets the purpose of it as much as she is trying to figure out “how to win”.  Do you think having the full version is a good supplement or is it sinking in as a stand-alone?

OK, Another Question about VCR – If you have the student book, but not the teacher’s manual you don’t have the answer key to the pages they are working on – is that correct?   And if you get the test book, for book 4 – do you really think the $12 answer key is necessary for correcting the test (from the sample – I think I could probably correct pretty easily without the key).  I’m thinking I may need the key for the workbook to make it self-teaching, but perhaps I could just get away with correcting the test part myself….

Let me look more closely when I get home, but that sounds right.

Christie – have you had a chance to look?  Don’t worry if you’re too busy, I’m just going to order it shortly and wanted to try to make a final decision on which components I need.

    Thanks!

I am so sorry this fell through the cracks. I’ll check as soon as I can, though you probably already got the answer.

I also checked out the notebooking sheets for English from the Roots Up someone posted with a simple 1 root/day schedule. I am going to compare the two today!

Not to confuse things more, but I think I’m going to get these at some point for SAT prep….I read good things about it on the Well-Trained Mind Boards: http://www.vocabularycartoons.com/

I’m the one that posted about the EFTRU pages. They look great, but I actually ended up getting Vocabulary from the Roots Up for my 8th grader and Wordly Wise for my 5th grader.  And then hopefully we’ll get in games of Rummy Roots and EFTRU games.

Christie, please share your thoughts after you compare:) I ended up just wanting the Voc. Roots Up workbook for ease, and it’s recommended in the WTM.   Hopefully it’s the right choice:) Gina

I will check out those notebooking pages.  I have looked at the description on the Rainbow Resource Website, but it’s basically as clear as mud to me.  Ugh!  Pregnancy Brain.  They sell an answer key by itself and I’m not sure if that would be adequate or not.

I’m just looking for my fourth grader so that Vocabulary from the Roots up will probably be too much here.  Looking forward to hearing more input… I mean school is still 2 weeks away for us.  Surprised
