Hello everyone! I am finishing my first year of SCM, after 6 years of AO. We switched because we wanted to do school together. My children are 13 and 11, (plus a 2 year old.) This has been a wonderful year… I love reading to my children, and they love it too. I have added AO titles to my oldests schedule, as he is a strong reader. We just finished Module 6, and will begin Module 1 soon. My only concern with SCM, and it is a big one, is the total of 6 years spent on ancient history, and the resulting quicker pace SCM takes through the rest of history. With AO and HUFI, Ancient history is a total of 2 years.

I’m hoping to hear from those of you who have had the same concern and what you have done to remedy this, or to be okay with it. Thank you so much ladies.

I would also be delighted to hear from anyone with SCM as to why the curriculum was designed as such, thank you!

This SCM blog post explains the 6yr rotation.

I have not used the history modules so I cannot comment on your other questions.  I am sure others will chime in:)

Do you mean the 6 year rotation? It is not 6 years of ancient history. We just did Mod 5 and it was early American History and World History from the same time period. Next year will be Modern History in Module 6.

Sorry, I just reread your post and you did mod 6.

I think we are going to combine 1&2 and maybe 1-3over 2 years by doing Bible seperatly. I have been reading on the forums how some make it work. 1-3 focus on Ancients.

Just to clarify, I understand modules 1 through 3 are ancient history. But we do two rotations, so each child would have a total of 6 years of ancient history, as opposed to 2 years (1 each 6 years) with other CM curriculums. Thanks!

We speed through the first 3 modules as quickly as we can.  Um, maybe that doesn’t sound right.  We do as many lessons as we can within a 25 to 30 minute time period, 4 days a week, mostly year round.  Some days that’s 3 lessons, others it’s 2 and some days it’s only 1.  We study the Bible as a family regularly and sometimes the stories are so familiar to them that I’ll say, “Tell me the story of Joseph being sold into slavery” and they narrate so well I don’t feel like we need to read the scheduled chapters in Genesis and we move to the next lesson.  Other times their narration stinks so we read the chapters or I narrate the chapter and we discuss it.  Our hope is to finish the first 3 modules in 1 to 2 years.

Sarah and crazy, will you then try to take more time through the rest of the modules and add more books to them?

Do you mean because, starting if starting in first you would do 3 years of ancients, then ancients again in 7th – 9th?  I agree when you look at it that way it seems a lot.  If you start your rotation late and then repeat it from the beginning, it does seem like too much time spent on ancients.  I’ve been struggling a lot with how to handle the history rotation having started late myself.  I have recently come to the conclusion that I am not going to be completely satisfied by anyone else’s plan — it’s just not going to work for us.  Sooo, I am planning to use SCM free guide along with other resources to tailor a plan for each of my boys that will allow for one more year in ancients.  We’ve separated the three subjects and are currently two terms through the Bible portion of Mod 2. We’ll finish the OT over the summer as well as finish reading The Wonderbook as a read aloud.  That should allow us to cover the Greeks in one term, and the Romans over term 2 and 3.  My oldest will be starting 7th in the fall, so that will give me 8th for mod 4, and possibly stretch mod 5 and 6 over three years if I choose to do American alongside World and Canadian history.  Twelve would be an elective year allowing him the option of doing one year of ancients or something else entirely.  Of course, I may decide to do something completely different by September.  I may even split them up and set them each on their own path entirely.

I think you just need to decide what you want for your children and when and figure out how you are going to get there.  There’s no one-size fits-all, even with SCM.  It’s just pretty easy to adapt to your needs.

To answer 2blessed…I might or might not.  I’m not sure yet!  I LOVE American history so I can see us taking a longer time there.  But in high school we’ll need to add in government and economics so going a bit faster in history would give them time to do that.  I take each year/history rotation as it comes.  For me, ancients is “one” subject, not three, which is why I’m trying to get it done within a shorter period of time.

You might try spreading govt/Econ over all four years. Set up in a fashion similar to fine arts scheduling suggestions or as summer studies makes it easily manageable.

That makes sense – 6 years over the course of 12 years Smile

I am not sure exactly how it will work combining modules but right now I really like the SCM modules, I need the bit of “hand holding” since we are starting and we have really enjoyed the book selections. If we combine 1-3 into 2 years we will have a 5 year cycle. I know that as time goes on we can adjust and add books.

I really want to branch out with other countries as well (there was a thread recently about non-western history books) and some of the suggestions sounded great, doing unit studies of specific countries. So maybe not just adding more books, but just a variety. We will also have to add government and civics (in highschool years) which will be more books. So I am sure variety will be added as the years continue 🙂

Thanks everyone for the advice, it’s been very helpful!

The main reason we spend three years to cover Ancients is because we want the emphasis to be on Bible history and how it fits into World history. We didn’t want to cram Genesis through Acts into one year, so we spread it out and tucked the Ancients in alongside as they fit.

That said, I’m glad that you’re all feeling free to tweak and adjust our suggestions to fit your families. That’s the beauty of homeschooling! Well done.

Thank you Sonya, you just confirmed to me the decision to start with your modules. I appreciate the focus on the rich history in God’s word. I am very excited to figure out where to begin!
