Ok.. I have a question for those of you who have or do use cloth diapers.

    1. Why did or didn’t you like them?

    2. What kind did you use?

    3. How do you know a good brand from a bad?

    4. How many on average would you go through a day?

With the economy I am “seriously” considering using them for the days we will be home and then only using disposable on days we are out. Not only will it help the enviroment but also our budget.

Any other comments would be greatly appreciated.

I liked the cloth diapers because the kids seemed to get fewer rashes from them, probably because they were changed more often. It is easy to let a child wear a disposable diaper for a long time because they are so absorbent. Try that with a cloth diaper and you will have a mess on your hands. 🙂

Also, fewer clothes were messed up when the child had a “blowout”. We used the traditional “plastic pants”. (I’m not sure what their official name is, but they look like vinyl underwear). A “blowout” might leak out of the diaper but it was usually contained in the plastic pants.

Another bonus with the cloth diapers is that the kids seemed to potty train faster. I think that was because they didn’t like the feel of wet diaper next to their skin. The absorbency of disposables takes away the wet feeling even when the diaper is quite “full”.

We used a diaper service so I can’t help you with how many we used or what brand to get. I’m not sure if you can still buy them somewhere or not, but diaper service quality diapers used to be available through catalogs. If you can find them, they are the best quality you can get as they are quite thick and durable.

    Misty,

I used cloth diapers through baby #6. 7 & 8 used disposables. I liked them because there is nothing like the feel of a baby’s bottom in a cloth diaper. I did not like the dioxin that was used to make disposables white. With the first baby I had a diaper service, but I do not think that is an option now. I didn’t like it anyway because I had to count the diapers when they brought them and they had to sit for a week, dirty. I was told that the electricity and water costs overrode the savings in diapers. I did not do my own analysis but I did not believe that (because I didn’t really care – I just liked the cloth). I used diaper service quality 100% cotton diapers for most of the time, but also used some birdseye cloth that was available at Walmart. Birdseye wears out way too soon – I think the makers are thinking they are more burpcloths than real diapers. We switched to paper diapers due to issues with the washing machine that caused me not to be able to keep up with the washing. By the time #8 came along, our lifestyle was such that I just needed to stick with paper. I would do cloth again, though!

I used cloth with my oldest and LOVED them for all the reasons Karen said. However, 14 years later when I had my next 2, I couldn’t find the plastic pants anywhere. I found diapers (online) but the only size plastic pant I could find was extra large. Nothing smaller. It was quite frustrating. I believe I found some custom made diaper/plastic pant in one, but they were like $14 EACH. I still believe if I had had cloth, my youngest would have potty trained much, MUCH sooner.

But…back in the day…I would keep water in the diaper pail with a small bit of detergent. It wasn’t nasty, I promise. There was virtually no odor whatsoever. I think I had 4 dozen and it was waaaaay more then I needed. Many became burp clothes and cleaning rags.

My oldest, now married, mentioned looking in to cloth diapers as well for his little one. I hope you can find the supplies, cause it would certainly save a bundle!

I’m using cloth diapers now, I like them because my little one has a ton of allergies and is allergic to disposables. We wash our own with our own homemade laundry detergent and I hang them outside to dry on good days, on bad weather days we dry them in the dryer. We use a combination of things we use prefitteds, prefolds and flats (at home), pockets and aio’s (all in ones)for nights and out of the house and there’s also fitteds with wool covers. Try this website for more information: http://www.diaperswappers.com and if you have any other questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability.

    1. Why did or didn’t you like them?

I LOVE THEM!! There is nothing like a cloth diapered bum.

    2. What kind did you use?

I have used so many kinds…(prefolds with wraps, Pockets, AIO, Fitteds, etc…)

    3. How do you know a good brand from a bad?

It is different for each baby to be honest.

    4. How many on average would you go through a day?

Again, it depends on the baby. A newborn more than older ones.

I would recommend two places and kinds….

Green Mountain Diapers. Wonderful service. I would recommend the Cloth-eze prefolds and Bummis Super Brites. You would need about 24 diapers and 6 – 8 wraps to wash every 2-3 days.

Another is on eBay and is called Cool Baby. They are pockets as well as being a One Size. So you would actually only need the 24 that you buy and that should carry you all the way through potty training. You can get 24 pockets and 48 inserts for $192 shipped. That is a truly AWESOME price!!!

I love to talk cloth. It can become addictive and expensive. Let me know if you have more questions.

I use cloth diapers with all 3 of my boys. My youngest is 2 and if I have anymore I would defintiely use them. Cloth diapers have changed so much since my older 2 boys. My mother in law bought me cloth diapers that looked like real diapers! It was great, I took them off rinsed them and off they went into a bucket to be washed. I never used them, but they have liners to make the poopy mes clean up easier. The only down fall was that you couldnt reuse the liner. I my experience my oldest 2 boys always wet the cover and I had to have more than 2 anyway. The all in one diaper was more beneficial. There all types and brands we used the Kushies, my mother in law said they were the better deal for the money.

I can’t say much that hasn’t already been stated here, but I absolutely LOVE cloth!!!! I used a diaper service with my first which completely turned me off cloth for a few years until I discovered pocket dipes with my fourth. I fell in love with those! I have about 12-15, which gets me through about 3 days…on the third day I am washing. The website which was mentioned is an awesome one which I have made many diaper purchases and been very blessed with not paying full price for a diaper! The cost is a little much at first, but even if you go dipe by dipe, eventually you will have enough and still be saving money than if you were using disposables. That’s my little piece. How are you feeling Misty? Thinking about you tons!!

I love cloth diapers. I am using them with my 4th (the only one we’ve used cloth with). I don’t have time for a long post now, but if you are looking for more information on cloth, this website has a ton of information and is well laid out: http://www.diaperjungle.com/

Ok.. I just got my 1st trail diaper (we’ll call it) I got a coolababy which is a pocket diaper. So my question I put this on and when it goes then the entire thing has to be washed right? So it will be a bit hard to see if I like it, but the price was right and I could do a load a day for a week (just small ones) I mean I do have 6 kids to wash clothes for. 🙂

What do you suggest for AIO’s? I am very interested in getting my trail on that front also. What did you get and why?

    Thanks

Shanna, (or others) what do you do if the diaper is to big? I got the coolababy and it’s a bit big for my little girl. I can’t find any small covers to do prefolds and I have lots of size 1’s I got as gifts to use.. so .. in the mean time. I feel overwhelmed with cloth diaper information.

I love the idea of coolababy’s they don’t need a cover and they are a pocket, but there are so many options out there how did you narrow your choices down? Also, is there places by you that sell them? There are really none here to go look at different options.

Wanting to get on the band wagon but feeling pulled down.

    Misty,

I just went and checked out the coolababy diaper as I hadn’t heard of it before. I found this review on DiaperSwappers which has a link to Picasa that shows the comparison to a BumGenius. It seems that the coolababy diaper is more loose fitting in the waist/thighs.

A lot of Target stores carry the BumGenius diaper so you might be able to find it there if you have a Target. They are on an endcap with the other specialty/boutique items.

An awesome cover for prefolds is the Thirsties cover. We use these 🙂 There are lots of websites that sell them.

    Hope this helps!

Can anyone explain why coolbaby diapers are only available on eBay? I can’t seem to find much online information about them. A woman in my town is selling them on craigslist for $9 each. I’m going to take a look at them on Wednesday (april 22nd) to see if I want to buy them.

Misty, thanks for posting your findings, and CJK thanks for posting that link to the review and picasa photos, they were helpful!
