Hymn Study

Select one hymn to sing together until all of the family members have learned every stanza. If you learn one hymn every six weeks or so, you will be able to cover six in a school year. We’ve included six in each group, but you may select any hymns to learn in any order. Singing the Great Hymns includes all of these hymns, along with audio recordings, to make hymn study simple.

Hymn Group 1

I Sing the Mighty Power of God
Like a River Glorious
To God Be the Glory
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Crown Him with Many Crowns
O Come, All Ye Faithful

How Firm a Foundation
Holy, Holy, Holy
Praise Him! Praise Him!
O God, Our Help in Ages Past
Fairest Lord Jesus
Joy to the World

And Can It Be
O Worship the King
Now Thank We All Our God
Once for All
Oh, for a Thousand Tongues
Hark, the Herald Angels Sing

Hallelujah, What a Savior
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Jesus Shall Reign
O Word of God Incarnate
For the Beauty of the Earth
Grace Greater Than Our Sin
Silent Night, Holy Night

The Solid Rock
There Is a Fountain
America the Beautiful
It Is Well with My Soul
I Am His, and He Is Mine
What Child Is This?

May the Mind of Christ, My Savior
When Morning Gilds the Skies
O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
Our Great Savior
While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks

Jesus, Lover of My Soul
Take My Life, and Let It Be

All Creatures of Our God and King
Be Thou My Vision
This Is My Father’s World
The Star-Spangled Banner
Praise the Savior
Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne

Hymn Group 11

Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken
Rock of Ages
Rejoice, the Lord is King
Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed
Abide with Me
Angels, from the Realms of Glory

Hymn Group 12

Christ the Lord is Risen Today
My Country, ‘Tis of Thee
Come, Thou Almighty King
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
We Gather Together
Who Is He in Yonder Stall?

Notes on Hymn Study

If possible, sometime during the learning of the hymn, read together its history.

Children may also use the lyrics of the hymn for copywork, dictation, or recitation. Some of these hymns’ lyrics are available as free downloads for manuscript copywork.

We’ve tried to incorporate hymns appropriate for these holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Resurrection Day, Independence Day.

The Center for Church Music Songs and Hymns has some great information to help you do Hymn Study.
