Charlotte Mason 8th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

The progress toward more independent work continues for your eight-grade student. The curriculum is designed as a wonderful combination of Individual student lessons, done one-on-one with the teacher, and Family lessons, done with all of your students together.

Sample Schedule

With the Family lessons and the Individual student lessons, each day’s work should take about three hours to complete. In a Charlotte Mason education, much can be accomplished in a short amount of time because the student is being trained in the habit of full attention and the lessons are not tedious.

Individual student lessons in eighth grade include the subjects of language arts, math, science, Latin, and personal development. These are the subjects that should be taught and mastered at your child’s pace.

Language Arts

Language Arts for your eighth-grade student include reading, handwriting, English grammar and spelling, and narration.

Reading

Most school books are read independently at this level. The curriculum includes a mixture of classics and modern, challenging and light reading.

Handwriting

Your student receives regular opportunities to transcribe lines from her reading of great literature into her own Book of Mottoes, or commonplace book.

English Grammar and Spelling

A study of sentence analysis and poetry analysis is completed, along with continued spelling study through prepared dictation using the second half Using Language Well, Book 3, and Spelling Wisdom, Book 3. (The first half was completed in grade 8.)

Narration

Both oral and written narration is practiced across the school subjects, with three written narrations required per week.

Math

Students will spend time working on both Algebra and Geometry, using an Algebra I course three days a week and continuing Geometry studies two days a week. Learning both Algebra and Geometry concurrently with the course(s) of your choice allows students to explore both abstract and physical relationships with numbers.

Science

A laboratory-based, conversational textbook that explores the fascinating world of the earth’s geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere is completed, Discovering Design with Earth Science.

Latin

Short, focused lessons in the study of Latin are continued with Getting Started with Latin.

Personal Development

Your student finishes the study of self-knowledge through Charlotte Mason’s volume, Ourselves, Book 1. The second half of Self-Knowledge is read and discussed this year. (The first half was completed in grade 7.)

The weeks are full of variety—with enjoyable lessons in history, Plutarch, geography, Bible, literature, art, music, foreign language, Shakespeare, nature, poetry, handicrafts, singing, and Scripture memory sprinkled throughout. Correlating these subjects, your student continues work on a personal timeline project, My Book of Centuries. Select your choice of History, Geography, and Bible guide and Enrichment Studies. If you are teaching only one student, the Family lessons can easily be done one-on-one.
