Charlotte Mason 7th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Your student is encouraged to develop his desire for self-education as the transition to more independent work continues. The curriculum is designed as a wonderful combination of Individual student lessons, done one-on-one with the teacher, and Family lessons, done with all of your students together.

Sample Schedule

With the Family lessons and the Individual student lessons, each day’s work should take about three hours to complete. In a Charlotte Mason education, much can be accomplished in a short amount of time because the student is being trained in the habit of full attention and the lessons are not tedious.

Individual student lessons in seventh grade include the subjects of language arts, math, science, Latin, and personal development. These are the subjects that should be taught and mastered at your child’s pace.

Language Arts

Language Arts for your seventh-grade student include reading, handwriting, English grammar and spelling, and narration.

Reading

Most school books are read independently at this level. The curriculum includes a mixture of classics and modern, challenging and light reading.

Handwriting

Your student receives regular opportunities to transcribe lines that struck him from great literature into his own Book of Mottoes, or commonplace book.

English Grammar and Spelling

Spelling study continues through prepared dictation, along with an introduction to sentence analysis and poetry analysis, as your student completes the first half Using Language Well, Book 3, and Spelling Wisdom, Book 3. (The second half will be completed in grade 8.)

Narration

Oral narration is still required across the variety of school subjects, while written narrations increase from two to three times per week.

Math

Your student continues to level up in math by studying Pre-Algebra, using the math curriculum of your choice.

Science

A conversational textbook, Science in the Atomic Age, is introduced that covers a wide range of topics studied in the context of history. This approachable yet appropriately challenging course lays a foundation for upper level science studies.

Latin

Now that English grammar has been explored, a study of Latin is begun, guided by the short, focused lessons in Getting Started with Latin.

Personal Development

Your student begins to explore the ideas of self-knowledge through Charlotte Mason’s volume, Ourselves, Book 1. The first half of Self-Knowledge is read and discussed this year. (The second half is completed in grade 8.)

And all of these studies are nicely balanced with enrichment from Bible, literature, Scripture memory, music, Shakespeare, art, nature, singing, history, Plutarch, geography, poetry, handicrafts, foreign language, and more. Correlating these subjects, your student continues work on a personal timeline project, My Book of Centuries. Select your choice of History, Geography, and Bible guide and Enrichment Studies. If you are teaching only one student, the Family lessons can easily be done one-on-one.
