Charlotte Mason 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum
Table of Contents
As your fifth grader becomes comfortable thinking abstractly, more challenge is offered in his studies and personal habits. The curriculum is designed as a wonderful combination of Individual student lessons, done one-on-one with the teacher, and Family lessons, done with all of your students together.
Sample Schedule
With the Family lessons and the Individual student lessons, each day’s work should take about two and a half hours to complete. In a Charlotte Mason education, much can be accomplished in a short amount of time because the student is being trained in the habit of full attention and the lessons are not tedious.

Individual Student Lessons
Individual student lessons in fifth grade are focused on the subjects of language arts, typing, math, and science. These are the subjects that should be taught and mastered at your child’s pace.
Language Arts
Language Arts for your fifth-grade student include reading, handwriting, English grammar and spelling, and narration.
Reading
At this level, your student independently reads many school books in history, geography, literature, and more.
Handwriting
Personal transcription is encouraged through regular entries in your student’s Book of Mottoes, or commonplace book, adding to his growing collection of great quotations culled from his reading.
English Grammar and Spelling
More English grammar is introduced through short lessons taken from the same interesting literary passages as those used for prepared dictation. The first half of Using Language Well, Book 2, and Spelling Wisdom, Book 2, provide the guidance for these discovery studies.
Narration
Written narration, integrated across the subjects, increases to twice per week, along with plenty of oral narration that gives your student practice in mental composition and self-education.
Typing
Regular typing practice helps your student continue to develop fluency and speed. Use the typing program of your choice or simply encourage your student to type his dictation passages and written narrations, depending on his skill level.
Math
Interesting lessons encourage your student to discover and apply principles of mathematics through real-life examples in drawing-to-scale, factoring, and further exploration of decimals and fractions with The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, Book 5. A hands-on exploration of geometry is also introduced once a week, using Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part I.
Science
The fascinating world of insects unfolds through a classic living book, Jack’s Insects, and the Jack’s Insects Narration and Nature Notebook. (This course could be used with all students in grades 4–6 if desired.)
Family Lessons
Personal relations are encouraged through enjoyable lessons in poetry, handicrafts, Plutarch, geography, art, music, Shakespeare, nature, foreign language, history, Bible, literature, Scripture memory, singing, and more. Correlating these subjects, your student begins work on a personal timeline project, My Book of Centuries. Select your choice of History, Geography, and Bible guide and Enrichment Studies. If you are teaching only one student, the Family lessons can easily be done one-on-one.
