For LA, we’re using Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well. The first day of Using Language Well my 4th grade daughter had to explain common noun vs. proper noun (we have been doing workbook style grammar since 2nd grade and has visited this topic MANY times), we both starting laughing at how “easy” the answer should’ve been, but instead she found it difficult to put into words :). I then realized this is a different style of learning- it’s so easy to circle or underline the correct answers on a worksheet but this style required critical thinking! It has been such a wonderful change and already in just a few weeks I feel confident she really knows the grammar concepts she is learning. I have also noticed an increase in her confidence; it makes her feel good to really know and understand what she is learning versus completing a worksheet.
