Written narration Question

My DD11 will be grade 6 next year.  We have not done any written narrations yet because of her challenges with reading and spelling.  I did start Spelling Wisdom part way through this year.  She is finishing the year with lesson 20.  She likes to write and will write things in her notebook quite frequently – though there are many spelling mistakes.  I have put off written narrations to focus and reading/spelling and to not be having her practice her own wrong spellings.  Should I move her into doing one written narration per week?  If so, should I have her correct the misspelled words or just ignore them and work on spelling through Spelling Wisdom?  Should I just wait another year?  It seems with her that I am constantly waiting another year and I am getting concerned that she is going into grade 6 and I am only giving her the challenge of grade 3!  When she was grade 4 I tried having her tell me what to type, but that didn’t go over so well.  We quit and just focused on other things.  I think that she will do better to do it on her own if I do it.  So, would you start written narrations or not?  If so, would you correct the spelling or not?  Would you just use the written narrations for spelling words (though it won’t have the grammar of Spelling Wisdom to see) or continue with Spelling Wisdom?  Or, just have her correct the misspelled words but use Spelling Wisdom to study?  Or is there a better option that I am leaving out?

I would slowly start written narrations– one a week to start. You could also have her dictate some to you. For the ones she writes I would let most spelling/grammar issues go for now. You could focus on words you see her miss a lot in spelling but don’t draw too much attention to them in the narrations. If you do want to mention something in her narrations, pick one little thing; don’t point out every mistake and surround that one thing with lots of praise for other aspects. IMO narrations are mainly about getting the ideas. I’d downplay the other aspects.

Can she type?  If not I would start teaching her typing skills and have her type most of her narrations with auto-correct feature ON>

We are using ELTL next year and it has them start by narrating to you, then they write the narration or a selection of the narration (that you’ve written down) for copywork.  We haven’t tried this yet, but it seems like a great starting point!  They wouldn’t have misspelled words either.
