    Hi All,
My son who is 10 and in the 4th grade is having a great deal of trouble with writing. When he attempts his narrations in the written form, most of the spelling is incorrect and he rarely writes more than two sentences. Has anyone else has this difficulty? Advice?

    Thank you!

Spelling shouldn’t be the focus at this age. Content is much more important.

My 10 yo is just now beginning written narrations, maybe 2 a week. He gives about 1-3 sentences. I’m completely satisfied with that as I know it will increase over time and with practice.

What I’ve been doing is having him give me an oral narration then asking for him to write what he shared. Obviously it going to be a lot less on paper but this gives him practice, plus he already has an idea of what he can share.

He does not care to write; he fatigues easily, so I keep it short and sweet. I only correct one error and give him praise for his efforts.

    I agree with My3boys. 🙂

The transition to written narrations can take up to a year. Spelling is a separate subject dealt with through dictation.

I have an 8, going on 9 year old boy. 1-2 sentences is his maximum as well.
