Would mini CM spelling lessons work for an almost 6 year old?

I know she isn’t ready for something like Spelling Wisdom, and I’m not sure she would handle learning the rules in a program like AAS very well. It would just put her in a panic to have to remember them all.

She is a proficient writer as far as fine motor skill go and LOVES to write letters to Granny, shopping lists for me, and captions for her artwork. However she always wants to know if she’s spelled everything correctly and is very disapointed when she hasn’t. She wants it to be ‘right’ and wants to make sure everyone can understand what she is writing. I’ve been reading more about the concept of looking at a word, visualizing the whole word in your mind, spelling it out loud, and then practicing writing the word. This is part of doing Spelling Wisdom, I think? Can I do just this part with words that I pick out? Then we could work on the words that she uses most of the time but has trouble spelling.

I’m wondering if this would be helpful for her, or just a waste of our time if such young kids just aren’t ready for this yet?

HOw about you make it more informal and yet give her the power to find out for herself by getting her a children’s dictionary which she can use herself? You can teach how to use it and she’s off – developing independence and personal initiative, too. I think the words will stick with her better that way as well and it will definately improve her spelling long-term w/o making it “schoolish”.

    Just my 2 cents
