    I am so sorry to ask this! I could not find a great answer to this question by searching the archives…I am sure it has been posted before, but have been combing through old articles and not finding the info I need.

    I am hs three right now and two more later so just wanted to be convinced that RS is worth it.

    There was a post pretty recently – but I’m horrible at searching – seems to me it was related to the manipulatives and games.  But there are LOTS of us that use MUS.  From what I understand RS is pretty labor intensive for the mother and has a steep learning curve when starting in addition to the price tag.

    I am not familiar w/ RS at all, as we have used and loved MUS from the very beginning. This year, I decided to supplement with Rapid Recall, but both kids are now back in MUS. A great thing about MUS is that you can buy the DVD and teacher book once and use it with all the kids as they get to that level, then just buy the student books and test books for each individual. Or, if you’re really wanting to save money, buy one master set of student and test books, and put them in plastic page protectors, then have the kids use overhead or dry erase markers on them. Then you can use them over and over and re-sell them when you’re finished!

    I can’t tell you why SCM chose RS over MUS, but I know that a lot of us on here use MUS with lots of enjoyment and success.

    Something for you to consider,

    This is what Sonya posted on the thread I linked:

    While both Right Start and Math-U-See are excellent math curricula, we think that Right Start math has some advantages over Math-U-See in that it

    • Uses an abacus with individual beads in two colors, like the fingers on your hands, for a manipulative, rather than different sized whole blocks of varying shades of color;
    • Uses card games to teach and reinforce math skills;
    • Implements worksheets sparingly.

    Unfortunately, Right Start goes through only middle school level; so at that point we change to Math-U-See. We haven’t had any trouble making the transition between the two curricula, but if you would prefer, feel free to use Math-U-See in all grades.
