I’ve read about Penny Gardner’s Nine Note Method.  I would like to add learning to play the recorder to some of my student’s plans, but I’m not sure what type of recorders to purchase.  Ms. Gardner has some she recommends, but what have your students used?

    Thanks!

It really makes very little difference.  Angel recorders are recommended by Penny; we have some of those and some that we picked up at our local music store for about the same price (2-3 dollars each) and we really can’t tell much difference, esp. when played by a beginner.  🙂

I prefer the “Baroque” fingering recorders (not German). They are more common I think, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one.

Here is how to tell the difference: a German-fingering recorder has hole five (counting from the top) which is smaller than hole four, whereas Baroque recorders have hole four which is smaller than hole five.

Yamaha and Aulos are reliable brands, but there are many good brands. I think as long as you’re not picking up a mystery brand thing at the dollar store you’ll be OK.
