Next year I will have a 5th and 7th grader.  I am planning to do Truthquest Ancients for history.  I am trying to decide which geography to use: Trail Guide to World Geography, Trail Guide to Biblical Geography or one of the Visits to…

We took the last 2 years to do Trail Guide to US Geography.  We didn’t follow the book exactly.  We spent a day reading about the state from the atlas, looking at the flag and listening to the song of a state, then a day mapping the state and a day answering the questions about the state from the notebook.  My current 4th grader loved it.  She loves geography. She loves the mapping.  My current 6th grader hated it.  She hates the mapping.  She hates answering the questions. (She is also a struggling reader which might be a part of her problem.)

I liked the Trail Guide.  I thought it was simple and they got good experience reading a map, working with a map and finding information.  But, I’m not sure where to go with things for next year.

What would you use?  Are you using?  What do you love about it?  Not love about it?

We use Visits To.  This is our 2nd Visits book, and I have plans to do a 3rd one next year.  My DC enjoy the readings and some of them like the map drills.  I will say my younger DC have struggled with the writing.  To work through this, we’ve been coloring the countries different colors.  As I call out the name of a country, they color it in.  My older two (ages 13 and 11), just write in the names of the countries.  Another option is to use the printed names of the countries and place them on top of the map…I’m thinking of trying this out next time with my 9yo.

We greatly prefer learning about modern countries over programs that focus on more historical maps, so I really like that aspect of Visits.  It’s also very open & go.  I’m not big on adding tons of extra activities to each subject.  The only “extras” we add are looking up places on Google Images or putting together a Geopuzzle.

We also really enjoy Visits To series. We have done Africa, Europe and this year North America. I look forward to using the entire series! I like that it is open and go, we are learning a lot. So much more than I ever remembered from geography growing up.

I feel like it is a perfect addition to History, because it is not so time consuming and involved that it takes away from our history studies. Last year doing Renn and Ref along with Europe was great because we were reading about countries in History that we were maping in Visits To… and like that it requires no prep for me.
