Should I have my son, a deep thinking 17 yr old, listen to/read Ethan Frome ( in Stobaugh’s Am. Lit) or House of Mirth (from Excellence . in Lit. Guide)? HoM has a movie version.

    Thanks

I would recommend Ethan Frome for a boy as there is an air of mystery and suspense to the story. I’m pretty sure there is a movie version of it as well.

I love them both, but Ethan Frome is quite short and an easy read. So I suggest doing both. HoM has some great male characters–one you may come to dislike and one you’re really pulling for! Both maintain an attitude of mystery that lures you into reading more. Ethan Frome doesn’t have any more mystery than HoM, and the settings in both are different, which makes it nice to read both. Both are worth reading!
