I am looking at starting SCM, but not sure where to start. We have jumped around with curriculum and we just need stability. We haven’t been all the way through American history yet. My kids are 13, 11 and 8. I have two ideas in my head. 1.) Go through American History from where we are now over the summer using what we are doing now and reading through the Beautiful Feet book selections to get “caught up”. Then, start Simply Charlotte Mason Genesis in the fall. I like the idea of starting with creation and going chronologically through history. 2.) Bag what we are doing now and start with Simply Charlotte Mason Early Modern guide and do American history first before starting in Genesis. This may be a better option for my 8 year old to hold his interest more. I am not crazy about doing history out of order, but essentially that is what we would be doing anyway with our current plan, as we haven’t done any ancient history yet. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? I don’t want to rush through American history, especially for  the sake of my oldest.

Truly you can start any where you want 🙂 We started with Early American when my oldest was in 1st, but have since jumped around a bit (went back to Ancients, but only did one year, not all three guides, then skipped to to Ren. and Reff) and it has never been a problem.

I would look at your oldest and the goals you have to make sure you can get to all the time periods you want/need to since already in 8th grade, but truly you can start with any time period that works for you and your family.

I’m going to jump off course for a minute, and suggest you read Charlotte Mason’s Vol. 6, A Philosophy of Education. This will give you a better idea of why you are doing what you are doing. It’s not so much about which curriculum, but why and how you are implementing it. Like sarah2106 said, you can truly start/stop anywhere you want.

I don’t mean this to be snarky 😛 However, I have learned over the years in jumping around that the grass is not greener. Once I had a better handle on Charlotte’s philosophy, it helped me to see truth. I’ve used both SCM and BF and either one is great.

No matter which program you use, be sure to view your child as a born person and expect narration. These principles alone will carry you farther than a particular history rotation. 😉

May you be blessed in your decision,
    Melissa
