My daughter is 8 and is a horrible speller and not a great reader yet. I am getting very frustrated with the whole teaching your child to read. SOme days she does great then others she doesn’t. I have to spell alot of things for her. Is this normal? Any suggestions on spelling besides copywork which she hates. Also does any one use the Mcguffy books and are they good. Just want to do a little old fashion teaching. lol.
I don’t have advice on the spelling issue bc I have the same problem here. 🙂
If you are asking about McGuffy for reading, I have an opinion. 🙂 We read the first McGuffy book and liked it but we then tried the Pathway Readers and LOVED them. We started at the beginning with the First Steps PrePrimer and would recommend the same for your daughter if she isn’t a strong reader. It will be easy to start but it also introduces the characters and the first lessons will go easily and quickly. We have not use the workbook, only the readers. I aim for my sons to each read one chapter a day. They find the stories interesting and I see great progress being made. We’re all happy.
The word-building activities that Charlotte used are a great way to introduce spelling and reinforce reading at the same time. The video on the Delightful Reading Kit page shows the method. Your daughter could use magnetic letters or letter tiles or foam letters or something like that to do the activities so it wouldn’t involved writing. You can use the method with any passage or words you’re working on.
