    Hi,
I have been thinking about adding in Journal time for my daughter and was wondering when I should start. My daughter is in the 1st grade and is currently doing copywork and narration. I would like to add in some creative writing as I think she would enjoy it. Is she too young for this? What are your thoughts on this?

    Thanks,

    Penny

I would also be interested to know what others have to say about this. My ds6 is also in 1st grade.

If your child is wanting to dictate to you and you have the time to jot it down, that’s great. I would go along with the age recommendation for narration, which is 6 years old, because storytelling is much the same. I got my daughter one of those comp books that has lines on the bottom and room for drawing on the top. She dictates a story to me every once in awhile. Then she illustrates each page over the next few days. We’ve done several things with it – matching up sentence strips that I make, locating words she can read, pulling from it for oral spelling, identifying sentence structure on a very beginner level. She is 7, nearly 8 and started this about a year ago.

    Blessings,

    Cindy

My dd9 has had a personal journal since she was 6, but it is just for her to record thoughts and memories. I ask her to write something once per week. Sometimes she writes one sentence, sometimes a bit more. I don’t review this unless she wants me to, which is most of the time.
