I would love to hear your opinion on using the resource Getting Started in Latin which is recommended by Simply CM to begin using in 7th grade.  Love it?  Hate it?

It looks like my child should aim to complete 2 lessons a week for the school year (lessons 1 – 71).  Is this about right?  A good expectation?

Also….  Would love to hear your thoughts on learning Latin in general.  Why do we need this subject?  What are the advantages in learning this language?  Charlotte recommended it a century ago but is it applicable to us now to spend this much focused effort learning it?  I am hoping to find some Simply CM blog resources to help answer my questions of why this is a recommended subject.

Do you mean Getting Started With Latin? Some of my kids used it a couple years ago. I really liked it. It was easy to use, inexpensive and the lessons were short. Two lessons a week will not be a burden in any way.

As far as the advantages to learning Latin, I can’t help you there, as I don’t have a strong opinion either way. I got this program because my son was interested in Latin on his own. This was perfect because it satisfied his curiosity but didn’t take a lot of time.

    Hope that’s a bit helpful.

ErinD – Yes, that is the title I meant to type.  Sorry for the confusion.  Thanks for the input.

We really loved Getting Started with Latin, it was simple enough to teach without knowing any Latin myself. The kids enjoyed it and they began seeing the Latin roots in English words.  I can give you a few reasons I choose to teach Latin, which may or may not ring true for other families:

    practice in logical thinking

    learning English roots

higher sciences contain a lot of Latin words

Latin grammar makes English grammar easier to understand

I feel like learning Latin is a good brain workout.

I hope others chime in also. If you want to read arguments for teaching Latin you can search Memoria Press for some past articles on the subject. All of their points may not line up with your philosophy of education, but I find it useful to read what strong supporters say. It helps me make an informed choice for my family.

Is there a particular curriculum you would suggest?

Love the book. I never took Latin but going through it with my sons was actually fun. I would write out the sentences on a whiteboard and they would take turns translating them. Also, I made a copy of the pronounciation guide page and put it in a sheet protector to keep on hand. Enjoy!
