5heartsathome…..I worked at our County Sheriff’s Dept for 3+ years doing clerical support.   I was deputized, but only for civil process.  I transcribed investigative reports, processed crime scene photos, entered fingerprint cards, and did clerical support for the jail nurse.  I loved it!  My hats off to law enforcement officers.  It’s a tough job being out there on the front line.  You never know when a routine traffic stop is going to turn ugly 🙁  Thanks for your service 🙂

It seems to me that we have a number of moms who hold an MLS or want to earn one. Perhaps, given the job market & hiring process, some of us ought to really consider operating our own libraries of living books. We all know there is a real need for that, and it would be a good way to educate other families about Charlotte Mason’s philosophy as well. My skepticism on all of that for myself is based on my current age (54), the ins and outs of starting a library (and the cost….we use so many public library books that I don’t own many at this point), and a lot of personal issues to overcome.

Being a single mom with little income (and caring for an elderly dad who is 87), plus having an autistic son who will likely always live with me, it is a good thing that I am able to stand on the notion that God will provide for our future and will lead me in these areas. Otherwise, it would be too easy to give up on homeschooling. I’ve been blessed.

Wow, Sue! What a great idea! 😉

I really have no desire for a library science degree. It’s likely it is would be a similar situation as having a teaching degree. So little of it would actually apply to what I do in my own library geared to homeschool moms. I tweak it so that it works the way my families look for books,.

Not a lot of reason for a library science degree, actually, unless you want a director’s type position.  I did not need one, and we just hired a new reference librarian without a library science degree, but library experience instead.  Experience trumps degrees.  We are hiring for a new position and are just trying to find literate people who can spell; honestly, this is about as good as we can hope for!

I’d tend to disagree with the idea that librarians don’t need an MLS.  My mom has worked for years and years as a librarian in public schools, military bases, universities … she could share horror stories on here about the folks hired in libraries.  But then again, a lot of what she does (and she’s great at her job, honestly and objectively) is easily learned on the job for a person with good work ethic.  As someone considering this future career path, I too wonder … is it worth it?!

Here were some interesting articles on the subject of degree or no degree –

But think how much better of a “classroom” teacher you’ll be because of homeschooling.  Part of me wants to go back to teaching after I’m done homeschooling – just because I think I’ll do things so much better and so differently.  The other part of me is still wanting a Lib. Sci. degree and to sew fabulous clothing!

I guess I am among the few who do not have formal degrees!  I graduated from HS and took some radio/television courses at a jr college.  Because of my creative writing ability I was awarded an internship at a local radio station.  I worked there, on the weekends, for nearly two years.  I was radio producer and board operator for baseball games.  I tend to agree with Bookworm about experience trumping degrees: it is very much like that in radio and television.

As a high school student, I did not have the inner drive to want to go to college and make my mark on the world.  I wanted to marry and have children which is exactly what I am doing.

Sometime in the distant future I would really enjoy owning a lending library!  How marvelous it will be to spend the day talking about books!  Also, I have secret dream of owning a party business.  There are few things I enjoy more than organizing parties!!

Great topic! I have a B.S. in biology. Never did anything with it though as I became a sahm immediately following graduation. I wish I could continue on as I love learning. Library or natural healing/herbalist. I work full time now plus home school and all I want is to stay at home again!

I have a B.S. In Kinesiology , emphasis in Phys. Ed. I originally wanted to be an athletic trainer and travel with college teams. I quickly realized that would not be ideal if I wanted a family. I switched to Phys. Ed. , and was a P.E. Instructor for K-8th . I am thrilled to still be using my training – I currently teach P.E. To the elementary kids in our co-op every Thursday.

    Thanks for sharing ladies!

Wow, what a diverse group of ladies. I have a BS in Criminal Justice and a JD in law. We are still paying off my law school loans. Ouch. I would never change my decision to quit working and homeschool. I feel like I have finally found what I was called to do. But if I did have to pick another career it would be in the natural healing area maybe a homeopath or naturopath. That is where my interest fall now.

I have a Doctorate of Pharmacy, graduated in May of 04 and had our first child in June of 04.  I have stayed at home ever since and wouldn’t change it for anything, no matter how many times people say I should be using my degree:)  Like the previous poster we are still paying off my pharmacy school loans:(  Big mistake, and I would do it all over again if I could and skip college, and would love to do medical transcription, or edit books/articles instead.  I would HIGHLY recommend young women wanting further education (but knowing they would stay home with chidren) to do all they can to never bring debt into a marriage, it’s not fair to your husband to carry that for so many years.

Amama5, you do use your degree with those children. My dh is DPh as well. Whenever one of the boys has something, I tell them to go let daddy take a look. 🙂
