Hi im new to this sight and have a few questions. I have been homeschooling for over 7 years and have 3 children, 2 are homeschooled 6gr&3gr, and want to switch to SCM or possibly another one and use this with it but have questions..

    1. Which Module covers The Eastern Hemisphere like sonlights core 5?

    2. Which Module covers Government and Economics?

    3. Is World History (like Sonlights core 6 and 7) cover some within each Module? I see that Module 5 and 6 says younger covers american history and older students broaden the scope to worldwide events but thats for just the years the Modules are for, what about earlier?

Im just trying to plan out my oldest 7th -12 based on our public school requirments for each grade level which is listed below:

7th gr- American History, up to 1850 ish,,

8th gr- American History, from 1850 to now,,

9th gr- World History (from beginning to ?)

10th gr- Other Half of World History (? on dates)

    11th gr- American History (all)

    12th gr- Government and Economics

I would like to stay with these time periods during those years and wondering what modules to use when? Any help would be great!!! Thanks for reading this long post!

    God Bless,

    Hi, Billiejo –

Let’s see if we can help figure this out. My approach to History focuses on Bible events and how they fit into the world-history events. So we don’t have a lot of study on China, Japan, etc. You may need to supplement for that.

We suggest a Government course during Module 6 for the 10-12th grade level. The one we used is from Notgrass Company: Exploring Government.

So if you followed the 6 Modules, you would cover Bible events, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Middle Ages, Explorations (Marco Polo, sea explorers, vikings, etc.), Renaissance, Reformation (based in Europe), American History and what was happening in other parts of the world during that time period. (The what-was-happening-elsewhere parts are not comprehensive. We don’t try to cover every continent and country’s history.)

You wouldn’t be covering the same time periods in the same order as the grade listing you gave, but I think you would cover them all. (By the way, I find it interesting that they allot three years for studying 200 years of history and only two years for the other 3500+ years. 🙂 )

Anyway, does that explanation help at all?

I use Sonlight and just enter the books in the planner. My son is doing core 5 right now and I have the 36 weeks listed in the planner and then I sometimes put individual books in also (just been too lazy lately to get them all in ). 🙂

I like to use the CM method with SL. I think core 5 is going to take up to two years as I have the kids narrate in some way after every reading, which generally takes longer than the SL IG allows. So I just use the planner and check off the IG as we go. That way I know what books to add in next and I still know when I have my 180 days in through the SCM organizer.

In addition to SL, I add in picture study, SL dictation sheets, bible readings, piano, guitar, nature study, etc. So much of this is outside of SL which is a HUGE benefit of the organizer. I have a really complete schedule to save in PDF and/or print out for record keeping.
