There is always a lot of talk about what our kids are reading and what we are reading to/with them, but I’m wondering what you are reading just for YOU! I’m always looking for great book recommendations!
I recently finished Gifted Hands about Ben Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon, and the entire The Great and Terrible series by Chris Stewart (loved it!). Next up on my reading list unless I get sidetracked is In the Land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor’s Journey in the Saudi Kingdom.
I’ve just started In His Steps. I’m prereading a few books for the dc. I’ve never read any of these myself and want to do so. I can’t wait to start reading the books w/ our new CM studies!
I currently am working on Finding the Hero in your Husband, Kidnapped by R.L.Stevenson, and a Louis Lamour book for light reading. I plan on reading Bonhoffer, the Story of the Endurance, and Pride and Prejudice as I have never read that many classics and wanting to read them before I require my kids to read them.
Just finished a delightful new book, Wish You Happy Forever by Jenny Bowen; I have three different religious books going lol and next up: Leaving Microsoft to Change the World by John Wood; Great Heart, the History of a Labrador Adventure by James West Davidson; and Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play When No One Has the Time by Brigid Schulte.
I actually just finished two kids’ books: Snow Treasures and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. I thoroughly enjoyed them! I can’t wait to read them aloud.
I’m stuck at the beginning of End of Innocence (is that the title? Age of Innocence? It was mentioned on another thread a couple weeks ago).
Before that was a quick, easy Dee Henderson book. (they’re like M&Ms to me.)
I have no idea what I’m going to read tonight before going to sleep. The Bible (always at least one chapter) and ……Maybe another kids’ book??? I”m out of reading material for myself!
I just finished Heartfelt Discipline by Clay Clarkson and I highly recommend it.
Currently reading When People are Big and God is Small by Edward T. Welch which has been a life changing book for me. It is helping me shed my “what will other people think of me” sin problem. I was worried more about the people around me than the Lord in my heart. All this talk lately about decluttering….that book will unclutter your heart and set your one priority straight. 🙂 VERY freeing.
A very fast and short read is Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Teri Maxwell. I used it to delve deeper into the individual scriptures that it presented. I was always impatient and too expectant of my little ones. I am growing in grace and it feels great. So much joy lately. 🙂
I am always reading something CM….always. I just can’t put it down. 🙂 I am reading through Penny Gardner’s CM study guide little by little and Catherine Levinson’s More Charlotte Mason Education.
One last book from SCM that I need to turn to right away (and put my other reads on hold momentarily) is Way of the Will since I am struggling with iphone distraction. I am ready to throw it in a pond! LOL! Seriously, if I had a simliar device that just allowed text messages, iTunes/music and Google maps (because we go as many places as we can to explore outdoors), then I would get rid of my cell phone. We hava a home phone and a PC. That is all the technology I need. More than that and I feel cluttered in this area, too.
I need to read my SCM Mathematics book, too. For some reason, I just can’t get motivated to read that one. 🙂 And I love math?!
I try to always have a classic novel going. Even if it takes me “3 forevers” to get through it. I just finished Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, which was actually a fast read. Before that I read A Tale of Two Cities- a 3 forevers book!- and before that, most of Jane Austen’s novels. I love Dickens, but he does take quite a chunck of time to get through.
I try to read one “contemporary fiction” book with a friend each summer. Last year we read 2- The Kitchen House and The Light Between Oceans.
I almost always have a homeschooling resource, however dog-earred, by the bed. Currentl,y it is Educating the Whole Hearted Child. Other times it might be Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit or The Charlotte Mason Companion. Or even Teaching the Trivium even though I would not classify us as classical homeschoolers.
I love anything English Countryside. So, I have been loving A Fine Romance by Susan Branch.
I am working my way through CS Lewis, currently on the Screwtape Letters.
I knew CM was for me when Charlotte advocated having several books going at once. I have always done so, but thought that it was a weird quirk of mine. It seems like a lot of books. It does take some time to get through things by this method, but oh the varied things I have been able to read.
Many moms say they are too busy to read, but 10-15 minutes here and there, if the books are available, and these moms would be surprised what they could read through in a year.
Not a lot right now. Things are getting busy on the farm and I have tons of books in the library that need to be reshelved. But I’m working my way slowly through Jane Eyre (read it in high school), Listening by Kate Seredy and O Pioneers by Willa Cather. I’m supposed to be reading through CM Vol. 1 but haven’t done very well lately.
All these recommendations are wonderful! Keep them coming!! 🙂
Like some of you mentioned, I also try to keep 3 books going at one time…fiction, non-fiction, and a devotional/spiritual type book. Currently I am reading Restless by Jennie Allen and it is fabulous! I also have been slowly reading through Real Learninig by Elizabeth Foss. And my fiction choice has been the Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.
I just bought Sally Clarksons new book the 10 Gifts of Wisdom, which i plan to start reading next. I would love to get through some of the classics as well this year and CS Lewis. I’ve yet to read any of his works other than the Chronicles of Narnia!
Are any other moms on Goodreads? Would kinda be fun, we could always get lots of reading suggestions that way! I get lots of good ideas for books from my friends there!
