    Hey everyone,

I am in need of some clear cut advice. I have been looking over the past history forums and I think I am jumbling up all the great advice. Here is my situation.

I have a ds8,dd6,ds5,dd2(almost 3)& ds 2months. We have been using SOTW the last two years because it was given to us for free. BUT I am not happy with how it neglects to tie in GOD’s working throughout history. I want something more biblical!!

But what do I use? I like the SCM modules but I really need a guide. We would be moving into the Early Modern Times 1600-1850 in SOTW 3. So what resources could I use as a spine with a guidebook (I need all the help I can get)for that time period that would weave in God’s providential work? If there were coloring sheets, maps and activities that would be a great big help too. Any Ideas?

Oh, and at what age do you guys start the BOC? I really think I need to add this to our routine but do you guys suggest that I just keep a family BOC at this point..or do you have your younger children keep their own?

    Thanks in advance,

    Shelly

    Hi Shelly,

We use TruthQuest History guides, and they have a guide for early American history for younger students. My favorite spines so far have been H.A. Guerber guides revised by Christine Miller. The chapters are short and you could easily add in other living books.

When I had kids that age, and before we did TQ, we did use Beautiful Feet Guides. There are so many WONDERFUL children’s books for this time period. I am thinking of the D’Aulaire books on Columbus, Leif the Lucky, George Washington, etc…

There are alot more choices for that time period for children from a Christian perspective than many other time periods. For that age, my goal is just an overview and to have the children really connect with some of the important people of that time period. So you have alot of freedom and room to find something that works for you.

    Hope this helps,

    Betty

I looked on line at TQ but it looks like the American history guide is for 5th grade and higher. Am I not looking at the right thing?

    Hi Shelly,

TQ also has three different guides for grades 1-5 titled “American History for Young Students”. If you go to the sample page and scroll all the way down, you’ll see the AHYS guides.

We love these! There are also activity books suggested and we get AH Dover coloring books while I read aloud.

    Blessings,

Oh thanks Heather. I will see what I can find. The idea of using the Dover coloring books is great. Thanks!! I will be interested to see if what other resources people use. Any other history resources, anyone? 😀

It sounds like your looking for Providential materials such as:

    or

Have you read about the Principle Approach for homeschooling?

    http://www.face.net/Default.aspx

Their focus is on God’s Providence for America. Reading your post, it sounds like something that might be of interest to you.

Thank you, I will look at those websites. I have heard of the principle approach but I haven’t done any research on it. But I will give it a look. 🙂

    HI Shelly,

I use TQ as my overall guide (gr. 1-3); for activites and hands-on I use Time Travelers HIstory study from HOme School in th Woods. We’re using “New World Explorers”. It is also from a G-dly perspective. I really like the two together because I can’t think of neat projects to do like some others, plus it puts them in a scheduled format that I can do as quickly or leisurely as I like.

Other history books beseides those recommended in TQ, I get from Yesterday’s Classics.

    Thank you Rachel,

I have heard of Homeschool in the Woods but never looked at it..I will now!! I definitely need something that has a scheduled format or atleast gives me the order of books to read and gives me a little background. I know nothing about history but I am enjoying learning about history now.

Have you looked at Mystery of History? It is chronological but it weaves biblical and secular history together. I have not used it yet, but this is the history program I will be doing this year with my 9, 6 and 4 1/2 yr olds. The books have activities that are geared towards younger, middle and older students so you can teach them all from one course.
