I really like Helene Guerber’s books (especially as redone by Christine Miller) and we use those for our ancient history–Story of the Ancient World, Story of the Greeks, Story of the Romans.
Amanda, the Oxford book can also be found as 3 individual books. The Greeks and The Romans are the titles of the two you would need for modules 2 and 3. I found them VERY inexpensively on Abebooks. Hope that helps!
Amanda, about the Guerber books–the Greek and the Roman books are closest in content to what is on Baldwin. Christine added nice layout, artwork, timelines and additional reading to them. The Story of the Ancient World was published alone by Guerber as The Story of the Chosen People; it was just about the Hebrews. Christine added a lot of content on this one about other ancient civilizations, plus the timeline, reading, artwork. I’m really glad I have the complete Guerber set from Nothing New Press, I have used the added features a lot. But in a pinch you could do just fine with Greeks and Romans on Baldwin.
Leah or anyone whi can answer…recently bought module 1. I have read all through the forum for replacements for Oxford First Ancient History. I have seen the Children’s Oxford Forst for the same price and it is not in our budget. What is the name of the third book to replace Oxford First, there is the Greek and the Roman…? Also, anyone know how to find the The Mystery of the Hieroglphs by Carol Donoughue, inexpensively? I have not been able to find it, within our budget. Any help is greatly appreciated:-)))
It is hard to be specific about why I preferred Tappan’s to Geurber. I think it is just that her narrative style sat better with me. I enjoyed reading it more. I think maybe Tappan is a slightly higher reading level. They both cover a lot of the same material.
JSpring, I believe the first book (that goes with module 1) is called On the Threshold of History. However, it is not as easy to find. We did module 1 last year and we did just fine without it. You can probably find replacements from the library if you want. If you do a search in this forum you should be able to find past discussions about the chapter titles that go with the lessons in module 1. That should help you with finding replacements. As for Mystery of the Hieroglyphs, I was able to find that a my library. Do you have easy acess to a good library or interlibrary loan?
Sorry that probably wasn’t much help, but I wanted to answer your question about the title and to encourage you that it’s not a big deal if you don’t have that book. Don’t let that stress you out!
Let me just re-post the list. I can’t find the thread. =) Use the chapter titles that correspond with the lesson to find replacement books about that subject. This covers Modules 1-3, and the Module lessons are listed to the right of the Oxford Chapter, and within each Module. Hope this helps.
