We will beginning this WONDERFUL guide as soon as my books arrive. (I think weather is interfering with mail delivery!)

About five years ago, we had two exchange students from France. They were here together for a year. We love them dearly and are very close to them. We found out on Wednesday that one of them is coming on ‘March 8 to visit for three weeks!! We are so excited! His mother is Italian, his father French. They live in France but speak both languages in their home.

I’m sure the answer is “ABSOLUTELY! Don’t miss this opportunity!” But wanted to make sure there is a reason why we shouldn’t…skip ahead and do France and Italy while he is here. I just want to make sure it wouldn’t confuse things later on. We haven’t started the guide at all. I’m just gathering materials.

My Chinese son has never met him. My middle son was five when he went back to France but remembers vividly almost everything they did. Francois used to carry my son on his shoulders almost everywhere, even hiking at Yosemite. Won’t he be surprised that this little boy he remembers will almost look him in the eye now. 😉

What a wonderful reunion! I don’t see any reason you couldn’t focus on the France and Italy books/chapters out of order. You could do the Make your own map of___ pages too. The only potential work-around I foresee is on the big map of Europe, as the countries are introduced in a particular order, so there would be an assumption on the Map the Countries pages that the students had already worked through the beginning of the book. But I would think that little glitche is insignificant compared to the benefit of studying France and Italy up close “while the iron is hot.” Take lots of pictures and enjoy your time together!

Thank you, Sonya. Yes, the map work would be off kilter but it wouldn’t be a major concern. Plus it will be great to have someone to pronounce the words for us, 🙂 I used them a lot while they were here before do do that. Our other French “son” has been back many times and when he does, I have him record some of my books in French I have in the library. Maybe I can have Francois do some as well.
