We’re considering visiting Williamsburg and Jamestown in March or April.  What should I know?

Should I check somewhere for special prices for home educators?

We did Jamestown and Yorktown a few years back. both had 2 sites, one the original and one with modern reconstructions. In both cases the latter was more interesting though the original site of Jamestown was worth seeing, it has a great climbing tree 🙂 I don’t remember them being expensive.

I received an educator discount in the Jamestown park gift store. It was because she asked. I did not think to ask anywhere else, but realize now it is a good habit to ask. There is a post from 2 years ago. Much of that would apply still.

We got a condo through skyauction for $200 for the week. We bought Powhatan 2 weeks ahead for March. Best vacation ever. Was able to do most of our own meals with the full kitchen. Everyone had their own bed/room. Only bad thing is now everyone is spoiled. 🙂

Buy the combo ticket for historic triangle so you can see them all and then return to your favorite(s).

We just visited Williamsburg in a few months ago!  It was during the government shutdown, so we couldn’t get into Yorktown or Jamestown, but Williamsburg was great!  We are HSLDA members, so we got a significant discount with our educator’s cards.  They consider it to be a teacher ID card, but will not accept a Declaration of Intent to homeschool in it’s place.  We did the multi day ticket and it helped to break it up and enjoy it in bits.  Now, if you are near the Shenandoah valley, I recommend the Frontier Culture Center.  It was more fun to my kids than Williamsburg…and it was much cheaper!  The website is http://www.frontiermuseum.org

What exactly did you get the ed discount on, Heather? Tickets?

If you are not in HSLDA, hs buyer’s coop. has a nice id card to print for free.

We were just there in September during the homeschool days. Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown all had VERY discounted prices so it was a great time to go. Ithink they do the homeschoold days 2x a year so I would check that first on the Williamsburg site. We paid $18 dollar for an adult 3 day pass and $9 for a kids. We stayed at the Powhatan resort as well and enjoyed it.

I would suggest breaking Williamsburg up into 2 days if possible depending on the age of your kids. Some of the special events they offer are pretty neat. We went to Mamma Said, Pappa Said at the courthouse (a storytelling event) and my kids both loved it. They are 10.

Jamestown and Yorktown both have two separate parks as someone else noted. We liked both and learned a great deal at both sites. Not sure which is less expensive. The original Jamestown site is worth seeing though. We did a tour with one of the archaelogist which was fantastic. He was a wealth of information!

    Enjoy your trip!!!

AWings2fly: Yes, we got the discount on tickets.   I think the discount is because of HSLDA so I am not sure if the hs co-op card would work…but it’s sure worth a try!

Thanks Heather. We plan to go back in a few years. It is way better than Disney. And we had unusually warm weather and went to Virginia Beach one day. We also did a day trip to Washington DC. There is so much to see and do, we really needed 2 weeks. I will look into hs days and the Frontier museum next time. As a side note, American Girl Felicity is in Williamsburg during that time period.

You know what I found out after we went?  You can walk around Williamsburg and not pay a dime!  Had no idea!  You can’t go in all of the buildings, but at least you can walk around, talk with people, and you can go in some of the buildings – and look through windows.  Tongue out  I think the person I talked to (who has been there numerous times and lives only a state away) said they change the buildings every day, so if you go 2 days in a row, who knows?

We unfortunately were there during the shutdown, as well, so no Jamestown for us.  I was SO disappointed, as was my oldest, who had just learned about Jamestown last year.  <sigh>  We were only there for a day during the course of a roadtrip, and of course it was rainy, too.

We did take advantage of walking through the town free. Also the church is free. We did this first for a half day to see what it was all about and where things were and you can also go into the shops to buy. Then we spent a full day on the tours.
