Usage of Literature Guides

    Hi!  I am going to use My Father’s World next year with my children.  I have been putting my curriculum together CM style for years with help from SCM and other sites, but for our family right now, the prepackaged approach is what we need.  It is recommended by MFW that my 7th grader use literature guides from Progeny Press.  I am wanting to adhere to their recommendations, but find myself resisting this aspect just a bit since I think, if my understanding is correct, these types of guides are unnecessary…that reading and narration are enough.  From your experience, is there anything to gain from using a literature guide…maybe development of an ability to analyze, etc? 

    Please understand I am not downing the recommendation in any way, I just want to understand what it’s purpose may be.Smile

    We’ve never done MFW but my oldest has done a few Progeny Press guides.  I would hate to use them for every literature title for a school year for fear of sucking the joy out of reading.  However it was really neat to do for ONE book in a year.  It gave her new ways to consider a book, which, as you get out of early elementary, can be a good experience.

    It is not recommended for every book.  They want you to choose 2 for the year..each year from grades 7 and up.  She has several other selections which will only be reading and narration.

    My girls are younger – (4th, 2nd, and K) and I’m not using Progeny Press, but I’m “using” a study guide from Beautiful Feet as part of our Minn of the Mississippi study in Module 6.  I say “using” because my girls aren’t actually using it, but I am.  I’m coloring the map, and collecting vocab words.  My girls only narrate what they’ve heard, do the map drill, and we just talk about the map on the wall that I’m doing.  We also do talk about vocab words if it’s necessary.  When we’re done the unit, I plan to give the girls a “worksheet” (*shudder*!!! *L*) with all the vocab words and just see how many have stuck in their heads.

    Really, my only reason for using the study guide was to see how it worked and to have something to put in their portfolios to assure the state that education is indeed taking place!
