I’ve been looking at purchasing these materials, and for some reason, I can’t figure out the set. There are two books with the boy on the front, one with railroads, and a CD/DVD. WOuld you recommend ALL of them? $$$ To get the whole set!I have looked at samples numerous times, and haven’t purchased them, because I need to SEE how to use them all together!
Please advise me on what you have expereinced in using these materials, either in part or in whole. How do you actually implement these materials into your life ~ week?
I am so excited to start thinking about how to put all this together! 🙂
I have the first two items and I use the companion the most because it has lessons. However, the handbook is good for reference. And the workshop probably shows you how to use all of it.
If you are only getting one thing, get the set with the little boy. These are the actual lessons and resources you will use each day. The other set is a seminar to tge mom, very helpful but the other set can definitely be used without it. Sorry for typos. I am on my phone, cant see what I am typing, so just hoping it is readablr and makes sense.
What format have you foudn it most helpful? DO the kids actually WRITE in the workbook>? If so, I’m thinking ebook, with 6 kiddo’s. If they dont’ write in it>, printed?
They don’t write in it, though there is space for you to jote down notes about each habit as you work on them. With ebook it would be nice to print out only one habit at a time because they are large books and will get worn with being used constantly.
When you all purchase an ebook, do you just print off what you’re using? Do you bind it (proclick, 3-ring, etc.)?
I’m afraid that if I buy an ebook, I’ll feel the need to hold it in my hands and then print it out, which would end up making it cost more than just buying the print option.
Can’t wait to hear responses on this. I saw so many posts about this being the BEST CM resource, let’s get a discussion going on the DETAILS and IMPLEMENTATION! (I know i spelled that wrong-I am in the middle of painting~!)
The workshop DVD will give you the quick-start how to form good habits overview, plus some practical tips for the top three.
The LDTR book is a parent reference guide, in which you will find everything Charlotte said about each habit. Her comments will inspire and give you ideas for everyday practice.
The LDTR for Children book is full of motivational stories, Scripture passages, poems, etc. for each habit to share with the children.
How they work:
Listen to the workshop to get a good grasp on how to cultivate habits.
Choose the one habit you’re going to focus on for the next 6 to 8 weeks.
Read what Charlotte said about that habit in the LDTR reference book, put the book back on the shelf, and go work on encouraging that habit in everyday life with repetition and motivation (as described in the workshop and the first couple of chapters in LDTR).
Once or twice a week, gather the family and read a lesson from the LDTRfC book to keep everyone focused and motivated for the habit you’re working on.
I often get asked whether to have one habit per child or one habit for the entire family to work on together. I usually recommend one habit for the whole family to work on, in order to help mom keep her sanity. Even if the particular habit you choose is easy for child A and difficult for child B, keep in mind that in a couple of months you will switch to a different habit. These months of focus are a great opportunity to practice encouraging each other, especially knowing that the “shoe might be on the other foot” for the next habit selected.
If you have children in their teens, I recommend your meeting with each one individually (as outlined in the workshop). Share with the child the how-to’s of forming habits (They will need to know that as they move into adulthood and continue to form their own habits for life.) and identify an additional habit that he or she needs to focus on. Then you can just have that “older student” habit also going on the side, but the main focus for the entire family will be the one habit you have selected and read about in LDTRfC.
Thank you for that, Sonya! I’m just waiting (um, less than patiently at times ) for the new L+L set so I can get what I need. I’m really looking forward to it!
And, your comments about the teens was another great tidbit. I have 2 older ones and the next 2 are “tweens” so fairly close. I like that suggestion.
OK, feeling better about this. Thany you Sonya for the overview!
I am a bit intimitaded because it’s causing me to examine my own discipline and habits. I don’t think I’m that stong in either. So I guess we will be learning this together!
After I saw the list of many many great habits to work on, it made me realize, we have a lot of ground to cover! 🙂
They are releasing a new DVD set intitled Learning and Living that they said will replace the current how-to videos.
It will include a new video of Laying Down the Rails, but the actual books of Laying Down the Rails and Laying Down the Rails for Children will remain the same.
