    Hi Everyone,

New here and slowly gaining wisdom from you all.  Thanks!  Just ordered my module 4 books and excited to begin!  Just wondering if anyone has advice for planning in Truthquest Guides.  I just discovered them.  My kids are 4th and 1st and I’d like to keep them combined.  My questions, if you have a moment:

    1) What year to begin TQ?  Wait until oldest in 6th grade to do 7 yr. TQ plan?  Or start in 5th–we’ll be in module 5/Early Modern with  younger kid TQ version?

    2) How do you line up TQ with SCM books?  Highlight SCM books in TQ and mainly focus on those?

    3) How do you work around periods not lining up exactly?  Just buy all applicable TQ for the SCM studies you are doing?  (i.e. Modern Times are 2 yrs. with SCM and 3 yrs. with TQ—-just buy all TQ guides and line up?)

I hope that made sense.  I’m trying to do this plus Ambleside and it’s feeling a bit overwhelming after coming from straight Ambleside—-but I want to get kids on same history cycle.  Thanks so much for any suggestions!  Blessings, Gina

    Gina,

I have been looking at TruthQuest also since I was so torn as to when to start American History with my girls.  I wasn’t entirely convinced that starting with Ancients was best for a 6 year old, but I would like a Biblical foundation.  We are currently working on Module 1 History, but that is always subject to change after the summer.  Any way, here is a link to a discussion on TruthQuest and SCM that I found very helpful.  Of course it assumes you have the TQ guide in hand.  Hope this helps.

    Hi everyone,

We are in the third year of using our TQ guides and love them.  When my kids were 7 and 9 we started with the Egypt and Greece and broke the book down over two years to line up with reading the OT.  This year we are studying Rome and will follow the TQ schedule.  Mainly the TQ are guides that you can use with any book.  I like the introductions to each new person/event.  We use the think write exercises for discussions.  I do not have the kids write out their answers.  It mostly helps me to think and guide them in thinking about what was happening during the time period.

    Tiffany,

Which TQ guides have you used?

    Hi Cindie,

I have used the Ancient Egypt/Ancient Greece and currently using Rome.

    Tiffany,

I like the idea of having an introduction of a time period, event, or person; and I can take it in any direction I want to from there.  I did not do well with a weekly grid of reading assignments in some of the other guides I have used in the past, that’s actually what I love about Sonya’s History Module handbook.  If I’m understanding you, TQ guides can be used with any booklist?  I really like the booklist here much better compared to what I have used in the past.  I noticed SCM has the TQ guide in the Organizer.  Do you use their booklist or a combo?  I noticed you used the Ancients with a 7 and 9 year old.  Is is too mature?  I thought their ancients were geared for grades 5-12; or can they be modified?

Thanks for letting me pick your brain!

    Cindie,

TQ is set up with suggested spine books as well as books on a specific person/topic. Currently we are studying the early church.  Under this section I can read a few chapters from the spine of my choice or a specific book on topic.  There are 18 books/chapters listed and broken down for grades 1-4, 3-6, 6-12, 2-5, all the way up to 12th grade.  You have the freedom to cover every topic or skip a topic.  It is what suits you.  There is no schedule to follow so you will need to set that pace on your own.  This feature has worked well for us because sometimes we wanted to look more into an event and have the freedom to do so.  I have used many books from the SCM book list but have also added some books.  We started with the Famous Men series but changed to the books by Geurber.

I think the suggested grade level is due to the ThinkWrite exercises.  All of the TQ guides have you explore who they say God is and who is mankind.  This can be done very easily from reading the books as well as discussing.  We have covered all but one of the ThinkWrite questions orally.  We also discuss what examples we see in our culture today.

I have found it helpful to purchase the guide and then after looking at the book options, purchase my books.  I even use the library a lot.

    Hope it helps,

Another TQ user here!  We’ve really enjoyed it.  TQ for Ancients starts with Egypt.  You could easily use the SCM guide for the time period till you reach Egypt and then encorporate TQ.  We started Anciencts when my youngest doing the study was 9 years old.  The way TQ handles the mythology and Egyptian false gods is very tasteful and quick.  You don’t dwell too much on any of those subjects.

Tiffany, do you also use the SCM guide?  I’ve already purchased everything we need for Middle Ages (we use the Guerber books as our spines), and TQ guide but am really thinking of maybe adding the SCM guide as well.  Do you do this?  I’d love to hear how you combine things (anyone) since SCM uses the Famous Men as the spine rather than the Guerber.  I’m looking forward to the new module coming out.  We have yet to start the Middle Ages (we’re still working on our new house before we move in), so I may be able to incorporate Sonya’s guide to our studies.

    Tiffany,

The self pace works wonderfully for me.  I’ve tried the box checking method, and it drove me insane to leave boxes unchecked and move on even though we wanted and needed to.  I like to have the freedom to sit and simmer or skim and skip.  I am currently working through Module 1 to give my daughter an OT foundation of who God is.  Her world up until now has been mostly about Jesus, as with most children her age.  Her curiosity about Moses gave me the courage to dive into Ancients, but I wanted mostly a Bible study with a sprinkling of geography, history and an introduction to the concept of the span of time. Gen. through Deut. has been great for what we need so far.  I think after we complete it, my youngest will be ready to join us.  At that point, I have planned to do American History with a Biblical world view.  Sounds like I’ve found a possible solution!

Thanks for taking time with the explanations.  I think getting the guide first and pouring through it to decide what books we will or won’t use, substitute, etc., is a great idea.  I can spend some time in it, get acquainted and make it our own for a while before we start.

    Thanks for your help!

    Anabetica ~

Thanks for chiming in about TQ.  It’s really nice to find other resources out there to compliment wonderful living books!  I asked my daughter what her favorite part of school was, and her response was, the reading I do out loud and her big girl books she reads all by herself (Pathway Readers).  We have found a method and rhythm we all enjoy.

    Hi,

This is my 4th year using TQ.  It is my first year using it along side the SCM handbook.  We are doing Module 1 and I am doing it just like Anabetica said above.  It has worked out great so far.  I am doing it with my 7th, 5th, and 2nd graders.  I really like TQ but the American History guides intimidate me because there are 3 of them (either elementary grades or upper grades) and each one is very thick.

    Hope this helps…..

    Blessings,

    Anabetica,

I have not used the SCM guides.  I am a planner and by the time the guides are released I feel like I already know the direction I want to take.

    Hi Everyone,

Our internet has been down, and what a nice surpise to log on to all these responses!  Thanks so much for your thoughts on TQ/SCM.  We just started SCM history today and my daughter seems to enjoy the books more than what we were previously using.  Thanks so much!  Blessings, Gina

Gina, glad you’re back online!  What TQ guides do you have?  I noticed your kids were in 4th and 1st, which by TQ would be American History; is that what you are doing?

Ok.. this is exactly what I am looking for also.

So I will be starting Module 3 Rome and wondering which TQ I should be getting?  My boys are 11 and under (1.5yrs apart).

And if I’m understanding this.. I would use the SCM handbook and could incorparate more living book idea’s from TQ.  Is this correct?
