So, I can’t remember the last time I turned on the television…like the actual television…as in “not a video.”  Last night my dh and I turned on tv (we don’t even have cable, it was just the network channels) and I saw a man torture another to find out where a dead body was dropped (the dead body being a woman with child), I saw a woman with conservative values be heralded as a stiff-necked, grace-less picture of idiocy, then the news came on and I saw a 2 month old baby who was abadonded in a stroller in an alley (on accident?) and the story of an infant who was found dead in a car.

I think that’ll last me for a while.  Ugh.

Television has few if any redeeming features these days…the debasing of women, the crime, the sexual stuff, it is vile. We only watch the odd documentary and classical music concerts and a bit of news on Fox and that is it. Media is horrible right now, like Ancient Rome…and I cannot watch our local St Louis news as the crime freaks me out completely! Ugh is quite right…

That’s so weird, because dh and I turned on regular TV last night for the first time in ages too.  Same here as far as only network channels.  We couldn’t believe some of the commercials and how many there were.   After awhile, we both looked at each other and said “Why are we watching this?”  I turned on an old episode of Andy Griffith and told dh I wish I could live in Mayberry. ;0)

I’m so glad to see it’s not just me! 🙂

So often when we do this and actually find something that is a “family” show to watch, it’s the commercials that have us calling out “inappropriate” so the girls don’t watch while we scramble for the remote ! And you never know when that’s going to happen, it’s so frustrating.

It really saddens me to see what mainstream viewers find as entertaining, love your comment about Ancient Rome 🙂

You know, I’ve had a couple of conversations and simply was on the fringe of the group for a few as well where people talk about how bad the media is, then say they watch “x” because “it’s not quite/ so bad as the rest of it”.  I’m sure I’m preaching to the crowd, so to speak, but we vote with our viewing.  If we find something offensive and do not turn it off, it’s a vote for Hollywood to continue to produce the kind of drivel/twaddle/debauchery that is currently flowing forth.  If we don’t watch, viewership goes down, sponsors pull out, the shows go away.  Really, that’s not rocket science, is it? Sigh. Stepping down from the soapbox…

I, too, like the comment about Rome.  It’s just so appropos.

We make a point of turning off, or not even turning on shows that are what a lot of people watch. We do the same with movies…don’t go to R rated movies and are very careful even with PG13. My daughters who are now young adults don’t want to watch that junk either….we try to support movies that are edifying and non violent and where the women are respected. It is hard to find. People wonder why there is so much violence against women and violence in general, tv and movies have a lot to answer for….people become conditioned to these things and then they have less meaning…it is awful. I want my daughter’t to know that their dad and I respect them and don’t watch things that demean them. I am glad more of us feel this way.

If it were up to me, I would get rid of TV completely.  When I’m home alone it is never on.  Unfortunately, my dh works as a technical producer for a cable company.  He feels obligated to have it.  As much as I try to limit what my boys watch, it’s hard when dad’s not completely on board.  Like today when I made the boys turn off something that was on (Disney network) in the living room because I didn’t like the “tone”, and I can hear the same show coming from the bedroom where dh is relaxing.  It’s hard when dh doesn’t feel convicted of the same need to be more discerning towards video games and TV.

I keep praying.  Our church men’s small group has been doing The Resolution for men lately, but unfortunately the meetings are nights when he has to work late.  he’s not a reader, so getting him to read something with me is a real chore — he’d rather a DVD curriculum (now we’re back to the TV).

Anyone else have this problem with dh?  How do you handle it?

We only watch the news as well otherwise choice dvd’s (G rated only). I find PG and up not appropriate because of language, bad attitudes, worldliness especially in rock music and style of dress, inappropriate relationships, etc. It makes me sad when people embrace the shows these days and even let their kids watch it as well. Lately we’ve had no tv nights during the week (we went w/o any tv 2 years ago for one year), and just 1 night of 30 min dvd and one movie night (Friday night). Our dd’s don’t miss it. We have more fun doing things we don’t get to during the day to even miss it. Most of the time the news is background noise while I’m reading. Wink
