My son used Accutane. So did a daughter-in-law. So, I have opinions on it, but will have to write later as we need to leave the house right now. Sorry.
KarenParticipantHave you tried using a soap with charcoal in it?

is one I’ve used that I really like – helped my rosacea and eczema and other skin troubles, too.
I had bad acne as a teen – I hated it!!! I hope this phase passes quickly for your son.
MariePowellParticipantRejoiceevermore and others, thank you so much for your insights! I have not looked at the computer since last night, and was literally on my way to pickup the tetracycline. I am so glad I checked this first! I will not be getting it. I have printed these and tonight will regroup with my son and husband on some of these suggestions. Thank you thank you thank you! I was about to make a big mistake it seems!
HSMom03ParticipantI agree with rejoiceevermore13 that acne is an internal issue and that the food we eat can worsen or improve it… that’s why I stopped using the erythromycin topical gel awhile back, and that is also why I recommend the book The Clear Skin Diet :). It covers the nutrition aspect as well as the dangers and ineffectiveness of drugs commonly used for acne.
lnosbornParticipantI had bad acne most of my life until the last few years… with scars to prove! I was on everything as well especially as a teenager. I agree with others about it being an internal issue relating to what we put into our bodies. I didn’t do any of the following to intentionally get rid of my acne but I found it all helped:
– I stopped wearing make up (as in foundation of any kind)…not an issue with boys of course!
– started drinking more water and cut down drastically on sugar intake (no sodas, rarely sweet tea), rarely processed foods, more raw veggies
-don’t know if this had anything to do with it but I discovered I was lactose intolerant (which gave me hives and eczema) after baby #2 a couple years back so cut out most dairy except hard/aged cheese, yogurt/kefir, and only raw milk I get locally. I am just predisposed to sensitive skin I suppose.
-started taking a probiotic prenatal vitamin when pregnant with #2 and found my skin really cleared up a lot. So probiotics are definitely a help in conjunction with a good diet.
I used to wash my face religiously and used hydrogen peroxide or some kind of topical solution/cream prescription or otherwise. Now I don’t even wash my face some days, or just splash some water on it and it’s good. Thankfully! I wish I had known what I know now when I was younger with my parents and I spending so much on special treatments/prescription medicines.
MariePowellParticipantWe all need to quit the sodas! I myself do not have the acne, but I am convinced these blooming diet cokes are causing other health problems for me! My son is a very picky eater; we will be challenged to try more natural, unprocessed foods and his sodas (mello yello). However, the acne outbreak he currently hass will probably be motivating enough to mke healthier choices. We will try anything as long as safe; I’m so glad I read before getting the tetracycline.
teachermomParticipantI see that dairy was mentioned above….and it can also be a big trigger for acne. I am curious about The Clear Skin Diet. I’ll have to check it out!
