Has anyone used this method to work with a student that has dyslexia? I am looking for ideas and starting points to working with my 10 yr old son. I am wondering if there is anyone who can point me in a good direction.

    Thanks

Charlotte Mason with a dyslexic student? Yes, with a few modifications for reading/spelling/language arts.

I do use a research proven orton-gillingam  reading/spelling program for dyslexics.  This program has dictation which we use. Once spelling skills are closer to grade level, I add in dictation from other sources. I allow him to use accommodations for written narrations. I have found that written language skills need to be more explicitly taught. I have not added a program for this , but spend a lot more time talking about language and how certain sentences/paragraphs work, etc. than I did with my non-dyslexic learners. At the highschool level, I suspect that the an explicit essay program would benefit him.

Starting points for a 10 year old, oral narrations for all subjects. Really work on getting complete sentences and thoughts in spoken language before attempting to get them to put in written form. Dyslexic brains are very interesting and the connections these kids make in their narrations are unique and insightful. CM allows them to find their voice.

    Best of luck!

I love CM for my dyslexic students.  We can use Audiobooks when needed so that we can work at their comprehension level while still working on reading skills.

My 11yo dyslexic son has ear-read Shakespeare, books like Kidnapped and Robinson Crusoe.  He enjoys history and science.  Next year for Grade 7 he will do Apologia General Science fairly independently reading his textbook along with their audiobook version.

Ditto the other posters on using audiobooks and modifying the dictation.  I’m using Barton Reading & Spelling for Lang. Arts, but otherwise, my dyslexic daughter goes along w/ the rest of us.   The learning by way of great stories/ literature is fabulous for my dyslexic daughter.

When I started w/ Barton, I was so pleased that the Barton program has built in dictation.  As my daughter progresses, I plan to usd Spelling Wisdom w/ her.

I think a huge plus to the CM philosophy is the seeing the child as a person, not as a problem.  Using great books to teach historical concepts and teaching history to the whole family together (excepting indiv. reading books or indiv. assignments) is a big bonus as there is discussion between the family members no matter the grade level.

Science can be approached the same way, with everyone learning about the same concepts, but at differing depths.  Math and Lang. Arts are probably  the only things that need to be done separately at appropriate grade levels.
