  • I have a question about switching to CM History from SOTW. We are currently enrolled in K12 first grade. I will be pulling my son at the end of the semester and we will be a private homeschool. K12 history is loosly based on SOTW. Should I switch to CM first year of history and start from the beginning? or should I finish out the year with SOTW and start second year of CM next year? This is our first year homeschooling. I have always liked the idea of CM, but wasn’t comfortable with scheduling…which why I went with K12.

Now I’m finding that it takes us too long to get through the lessons because of all the tedious work that is required. My son does best with short, to the point lessons and I think CM is a great example of that…K12…not so much. Any advice in switching in the middle of the year would be great. Also advice on how to deal with most of my family being public school teachers who have only seen the failed attempts at homeschooling.

Welcome FreedomHomeschool. I love your user name. I am not familiar with K12. However, we did use Story of the World Ancients a few years ago. You can stay with that book, but use it in a CM way with short lessons, reading aloud enough to keep their attention and then having age 6 and up do narration. You could add in some fun crafts or related coloring pages and do copywork for writing.

Regarding ps teachers, my father is a retired ps teacher. It was a bit discouraging when he told me that he did not think I was doing the right thing to homeschool. We did not debate it, but agreed to disagree respectfully…and then I went to my first homeschool convention. There I was blown away by all the excitement and great teaching resources available. Seasoned homeschoolers helped me narrow down the choices and encouraged me. I knew I was following God’s will and had great peace about that. I did my research and chose what I thought was best for my family. I see the fruit of my labor now. They love learning. And I love learning right along side of them. We vacation to museums now! We also joined a local hs group where I received much support. You are welcomed here to this forum and it is an excellent source of encouragement and wisdom for the home educator. Also I know of many homeschoolers who used to be a school teacher.

I’m not familiar with K12, either. We follow a CM-style for history. I generally like to use SOTW as the spine for our history and I fill in with living books that correspond to the lessons from our local library.

We use SOTW as an audio, though, usually when we are travelling in our vehicle. Each section is about 10 minutes, which is a perfect length for us. Then our family history readings are living books that I’ve gathered to round out SOTW.
