My 4th grader has not enjoyed the CM method as much as his brothers and we have been struggling. For this next semester, I’d like to try something different for him– maybe doing Math and Language Arts on the computer but keeping the other subjects CM/living book based. He is very independent and wants to dive in to school first thing in the morning before the rest of us have even opened our eyes. I just haven’t been able to find much CM style material that he can use independently at the age of 9.

Have any of you used an online program along side CM methods with success?

We’ve had great success with Leadership Education Academy. Our DD is currently doing a Literature and Art class through them and loving it. They also offer Math but i’m not sure about Language Arts, they offer Writing courses which may encompass that.

I’ve also heard great things about Bravewriter Academy online classes….no personal experience with them though.

    Best of luck!

Yes, I combine the two. Mine are high school, though. 4th grade is a little on the low end for Computer classes, IMO. Can you just give her subjects she may have done together, independently? You’ll be checking them. She can start and finish at a pace which you both agree on. Perhaps beginning a morning or weekly check with her now would be wise instead of waiting until she’s older. That way she still recognizes your authority in this area  (which outsourcing can erode if not careful).

Landry Academy and Inspired Scholar are the ones we’ve used.

I’ve been blessed to find and been offered Landry semesters at a significantly low cost.

My advice in addition to the daily and/weekly schedule check, give her subjects she can do independently now-history, science, and/or lit- in addition to the normal independent ones -math. Keep at least one or two -or more- like art 1x/wk for example, together. I warn not to totally turn her loose yet, as she may forget she is in a family environment and forget to develop the skills required to be patient with aothersnd toletant of others different than herself and submissive to you.

However, she may need more challenging work, faster; and she just may be a different, more driven personality than you. I think having one class online at her age would be a prudent start, something you despise teaching or grading, perhaps?

Other places I haven’t used but heard good about: Virtual Homeschool Group; Wilson Academy; LEA mentioned above. I know there are others, but my mind is gone for time-being!

We used time4learning for a short period and it worked out okay.  It was very independent and I got weekly reports to print and save.  I had considered trying k5learning but we got back to CM methods before need for that.  You could check these out to see if they would meet your needs.  Alpha Omega Switched-On Schoolhouse is computer-based.  I have a friend who uses it, but have seen mixed reviews on it.

As far as working independently, check out urthemom.com.  My children were more independent in their studies by about age 9, especially since they were reading well on their own by then.  CLE Sunrise math light units and Queen’s Language Lessons (CM-based) are good for independent learning.  pdf samples are available online.

All four of my kids (ages 15 to 7) use Teaching Textbooks for Math, and I am so thankful for it.  I still sit with my younger two (ages 8 and 7) to work through the lessons with them, but the structure, spiral-approach, and thorough explanations are a great fit for my kids.

I had no reservations about my older two, who are math-minded, using the program.  I had concerns about one of my daughters, who takes longer to learn new things, being successful with the program.  Starting her on TT this year was a great decision.  She has gained skills, a breadth of knowledge, and confidence using the program.
